Professor William Meadows and colleague Chuck Bair, are conducting a survey
of historic and prehistoric sites along the east fork of White River in
Lawrence, Jackson, Washington and Martin counties.
Among other evidence of early settlement in that area, they have found
unplotted cemeteries that go back to the 1820s and 1830s which are not on
the maps.
They have found a very early white settlement in Lawrence County which dates
back to at least 1810 to 1820 and which continued at least into the 1840s.
This settlement does not appear on any known maps, but it is located in an
upland area along a creek. It had a grist mill and a cemetery with at least
120 tombstones.
Meadows and Bair are interviewing people who have collections or have
historic or prehistoric sites on their property. Anyone who has artifacts
and/or information about such a site can reach Professor Meadows at (812)
277-0824.
