Carol:
I am as incensed over the desecration of Native American burial sights as of
those of Caucasians or African-Americans.
The difference -- in MY mind -- is that Native American burial sites are
protected by federal law, though this does not always protect them from
disturbance, scientific research and analysis. Personally, I believe that
the final resting place of ANY human should not be disturbed.
Unfortunately, that is all too often not possible.
The other issue (also federal in nature) is that under the U.S. Code, the
exact location of Native American burial sights is generally confidential.
There are no authorized publications (to my knowledge) identifying where
Indian burial grounds are located. This is done to protect those graves
from looters. The downside to that is that not knowing exactly where they
are, we never know when they will be encountered as development spreads into
more rural areas.
As always, I don't know the answers. I only know what my personal beliefs
are -- human burial grounds should not be disturbed for the sake of
"progress".

Lois, I don't hear the same kind of indignation about the removal
of these
Indian remains that echo across the internet over a pioneer cemetery. I
know
they may have been enemies of the pioneers in some cases, but most of
those
problems were started by the white man, especially on the Plains. Some of
us
also have Indian ancestors.....
