"A hidden link to the past -- Township trustee, historical society work to
restore old cemetery"

PORTAGE, IN: This is a story from a month ago (sorry, I missed this one)
relating a very encouraging tale about a cooperative effort between the
Portage Twp. Trustee and the Portage Community Historical Society to restore
the long-neglected James/Schrock Cemetery there.
The site is thought to have been the burial place between 1836 and 1884 for
about 40 people. The surnames of those known to be buried here include:
James, Schrock, Allen, Wolf,
Stoner, Hockelberg, Griffen, Irwin, Worman,
Kuill, Kuhl, Kern and Dorr.
In the 1950's, a descendant protested and lobbied against the construction
of the Indiana Toll Road over the cemetery and even threatened legal action.
The road was curved to bypass the cemetery. Some 50 years later, the site
has been heavily vandalized.
The Portage High School Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (Jr. ROTC)
recently volunteered their time to help with clean-up efforts.
The URL for the full story is quite long and complex:
