Bob and Jan Woltz <Bobandjan2(a)aol.com> have reported their interest in a
restoration project at Weaver Cemetery in Daviess County.
Unfortunately, at the moment, we don't have an INPCRP County Coordinator or
County Contact for Daviess County, but I'm sure there are several folks on
this e-mail group with an interest in that county. I'm hoping they'll
contact Bob and Jan.
Fall is an EXCELLENT time to undertake a cemetery clean-up/restoration
project (less snakes, less vegetation). I'm hoping that, through this list,
Bob and Jan can connect with a few people in that area who want to "get
their hands dirty".
Don't forget what a valuable resource is available to efforts such as these
through the Probation Officers in the County Superior Courts in the form of
people working off community service sentences. Also, the County Sheriff's
office can be of great use by providing "convict labor" in the form of
inmates who volunteer for such community service projects. These are
perfect resources for doing unskilled, heavy labor (clearing brush, etc.)
Other resources include Boy Scouts, local historical/genealogical societies,
etc.
I highly recommend, once again, the book "Landscapes of Memories: A Guide
for Conserving Historic Cemeteries" featured on the INPCRP main webpage at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp .
That webpage also includes an outline for tackling such a project.
Finally, don't forget the Monroe Co. Historical Society is presenting its
Cemetery Seminar on October 23, 1999 in Bloomington. This could be a
perfect investment in learning how to undertake cemetery restoration
projects.
If I can provide any further information, please let me know.
