A friend of mine, Ruth Pride of Wheatland, Indiana, called and told me
about the following item in her magazine. Ruth does not have email so I
told her I would send this out to everyone.
The Sept/Oct issue of Indiana Perservationist Magazine of the Historic
Landmarks Foundation of Indiana had an article entitled "Indiana
Observed" on page 19. It contained the following comments by March
Davis, Director of Community Services State Headquarters. "Indiana's old
cemeteeries enrich the landscape with grave markers that commemorate a
person's or a family's presence in time and place. However, abundant
cemeteries and their monuments may seem, they are really quite fragile,
subject to a variety of forces that actively jeopardize their intended
permanence." The article refers to the General Assembly passing HB1522
and particularly in reference to trafficking in cemetery artifacts and
ends with the thought that the bill "is a step in the right direction"
but still "we have a long way to go in Indiana before our cemeteries are
adequately protected."
