We have a special interest in the above cemetery. It is located along the
Daviess / Greene County line in Elmore Township, Daviess County. We believe
Jan's 4g-grandfather William Dellinger (176x-1831) is buried there. When we
visited the cemetery in 1997, there were only 7 stones remaining. When we
talked to a young gentleman from the area, he said he remembered visiting the
cemetery as a teenager (maybe 10-15 years earlier) and that there were 75
stones there at that time.
The cemetery sits on private property. Former owners of the property let
their cattle graze there. We met the father of the current owner of the
property in 1997 - Andy Monroe. He was keeping it mowed. He seemed
interested in restoring the cemetery. We feel there's a good chance that by
"rodding" the cemetery, many other stones could be found - perhaps Jan's
ancestor. Four of the stones which were there were for Dellingers, but they
were not direct ancestors. One of the stones was for Joseph Dellinger, who
died during the Civil War. There were flags in the cemetery the day we
visited it, but we don't know what group had placed them there.
William Dellinger moved to what was then Knox County and bought land there in
1817. That land became part of Greene County. William is listed as one of
the early settlers of Greene County in a county history we read.
We're not sure what, if anything, your group would do about restoring a
cemetery like this. This cemetery was in use during what we would consider
pioneer times in this area. We're posting this to make the members of this
list aware of Weaver cemetery.
