The wheels of government turn slowly, particularly in an election season. The
DNR has by now filled the position responsible for creating and overseeing the
Indiana cemetery database. Presumably they will have to assess the problem
and arrive at a plan that details this rather monumental undertaking (no pun
intended). There may well be in excess of 20,000 cemeteries in Indiana. This
will require careful planning and I would think that the DNR would want to
hold hearings to solicit input from interested groups.
I would suggest contacting the DNR, Division of Historic Preservation, (317)
232-1646 and or frequently checking the DNR web site:
http://www.state.in.us/dnr/historic/index.htm for updates and potential policy
announcements.

Subject: Re: [INPCRP] Recording Cemeteries
Given that the bill was only permissive (ie. says they 'may'
do this...not
that they 'must' do it) has anyone heard if they actually intend to do it?
Or if so, where/when/how etc.? Hmm, was any funding voted to support this
activity? That's usually what it takes to get something that is only
permissive actually carried through?
Unfortunately, I don't live in the counties where the cemeteries I'm
concerned about are located...so I don't get to vote for any of the
candidates that might be for or against actually getting anything done to
them, at least not on a local level. Locally, there isn't even a choice on
state representative/senator...as the two incumbents are both unopposed.
