I copied this message from another list. I'm guessing this procedure would
peel some surface off a crumbling stone. Instead of replying with my
"guess", I'd prefer to be the emissary of a knowledgeable reply.
Here it is..
....A while back we had a discussion about what to do and what NOT to do with
cemetery stones as far as trying to enhance the reading of the old ones. I
had a thought (dangerous!!) and wondered if some of our "resident" chemists
could tell me if this would be harmful.
I frequently make casts of things with a product for model railroaders.
It's a latex rubber that can be painted on, let dry, and peeled off to make
a mold which can then be filled with plaster, etc. Would the latex rubber
be bad for a gravestone? It seems to me that if I could make a mold of the
stone face and fill it with plaster, then I could use many different
methods to enhance the reading without touching the gravestone itself.....
