Re the missing burial records at old St. Peter's Cemetery in Harrison
County: Have you all checked the archives at Notre Dame?
I am interested in burials at an old church cemetery in Samuels, Kentucky,
specifically St. Gregory's. Wandering around the web one day I came across
the fact that Notre Dame has archived some records for churches around
Kentucky, Indiana, etc., including the parish in which I am interested. I
haven't actually talked to anyone at the university yet but their web site
indicates that they do have what I need.
I notice that their web site indicates that they have some records from St.
Peter's in Buena Vista, Indiana:

Can you tell me where this cemetery is located? I have a list of
cemeteries in Harrison Co., but it does not include an Old St. Peters. I
am co-chairing a project for the Indiana Genealogical Society to list the
names and locations of all cemeteries in the state.
Also, can you tell me if Scott Township still exists or if it has been
merged into Harrison Township?

Old St. Peters is located South of Elizabeth Ind. off of Hy.11, Appx. 1
mile
accross country, South West from St Peters Church at Buena Vista. The
first
church was a Log Building. It was deeded to the Catholic church in
1849.
It
is in Taylor Twp. It is located on a 4 acre tract in the bottom
center of
the
North West 1/4 of sec. 29. Twp. 5 Range 5 It is a Small cemetery
devoid of
stones now. They were Bulldozed over a small hill in August of 1965. I am
setting a Memorial Stone and Black Granite Plaque Oct. 14, 2000, in memory
of
those buried there. There is apparently no record of the burials,
except
for
the stones I have probed for and recovered. I am working with the
Geneaology
Dept. at the Harrison Co. Library to record all information I can
recover.
I
am also working with the Priest in charge to see if they have ANY
information
at all on the burials. I understand the church records are almost
non
existiant We cleaned the site today (saturday 30 sept) The priest has been
very cooperative, in allowing the cleanup by volunteers, and allowing me
to
erect a small Memorial. With Gods help I will be allowed access to
more
information. Does this answer any of your questions. If not I will try
again, if you will be more specific about what you need. Also today we
recieved from an Elderly neighbor, that he was told about 15 - 20 years
ago,
there are 2 or 3 Civil War Vets. Buried there. Unfortunately I have
no
Proof.
You can see this is a pet project of mine, and I ramble on, but I do
not
want
this Cemetery Forgotten because there are no stones standing.
All for now, jb502000(a)aol.com

with
Washington Twp.

THIS IS A CEMETERY -----
"Lives are commemorated - deaths are recorded - families
are reunited - memories are made tangible - and love is
undisguised. This is a cemetery.
"Communities accord respect, families bestow reverence,
historians seek information and our heritage is thereby enriched.
"Testimonies of devotion, pride and remembrance are carved
in stone to pay warm tribute to accomplishments and to the life -
not the death - of a loved one. The cemetery is homeland for family
memorials that are a sustaining source of comfort to the living.
"A cemetery is a history of people - a perpetual record of
yesterday and sanctuary of peace and quiet today. A cemetery
exists because every life is worth loving and remembering - always."
