Hello all,
I am forwarding this request for help on to each of the cemetery maillists
I know about in hopes that someone from the geographical area will see the
email and perhaps help.
This request is for assistance in Montana. I have responded to Garry and
given him ideas but unfortunately I am not an expert in Montana laws or
cemeteries.
If you know of someone in Montana or know of Montana cemetery laws, please
contact Garry personally.

Subject: indian graves
Andi,
Theresa Trebon referred me to you. I was telling her about the graves of
5 indians shown me during a recent trip to Montana. These graves are in a
pasture just west of Twin Bridges, in Madison County. My interest in them
exists because one of the graves is of a woman who is a distant family
member, and the wife of one of the early pioneers who settled the region.
These graves must date from the late 1800's. The native wife was not
allowed burial in the white cemetery with her husband.
The person who took me to see the graves is also a distant relative. She
lives in Twin Bridges and may know who lies in the other graves, also. She
told me that at one time there had been a white fence around the graves but
the person who ranches the land had pushed it into a neighboring creek,
also small white crosses put there sometime after. Photos do show the fence
and markers did exist. The woman would like to protect the graves. She is
justifiably concerned that they will be lost forever after she passes on.
Is there some way to do this, legally and properly? The graves are more
than just a quaint family burial site, they have some historical
significance.
Thank you for any help you can provide.
Yours, Garry Cline mailto:cline@fidalgo.net
