Walt,
I agree with you on this, and this is an idea that was kicked around
earlier. Last November I e-mailed Katherine Dill my feelings on this when
I found that a work conflict would prevent me from participating in the
meeting to discuss the advanced workshop. Here is part of my letter to her:
"Another idea I would like to discuss with everyone is creating a Cemetery
Restorationist Certification Program. We all have seen people who go to
one workshop and think they have all the information they need to tackle
anything. If we created a series of workshops or "schools" where the
participants will learn every aspect of cemetery restoration, and require
that they meet the "performance objectives" of every segment or class
before they receive a passing score. Certification would require the
successful completion of each class, and possibly performance and/or
written tests. This will take more than one weekend to accomplish, but I
think will result in a higher level of proficiency for workshop attendees."
I still think this is a good idea and something that we could work toward
with the workshops.

My next statement will probably bring up a lot of feedback, but here
it is.I
would like to see some certification brought into scene.
To restore a historical building,to do welding ,electrical work, the list
could go on,don't we expect it to be done by qualified people.
Maybe it is just me,but I want to see these, tombstones, graveyards, the work
of artistic stonecarvers, historical information, the memorial of those who
have completed their purpose here on earth, treated a bit different than
looking at them as just a mere collection of stones.
Maybe when Mount Rushmore needs some work we could take what we got and fix
it for them!
Please do not get me wrong,I appreciate all that you ,I, and anyone does to
preserve our history, but I think we all need more education, but at least let
us not inform people just to do what it is that they are comfortable with
,if it is not in the best interest to the particular piece of history we are
trying to preserve.
I know that some of you will not understand, nor agree with me on this, but
that is my true feelings.
I have a great passion for this work and do not like seeing it taken so
lightly.
Throw me off the list,if need be.
