All this attentiveness is catching, I am so glad. For years I gave the
seminars on cemeteries at the state conventions and they were always well
received by the Trustees who attend conventions. ( but never as informative
as John is doing now) Out of a thousand Trustees only a few hundred have the
time and money to stay for the convention. Knowing that, you can again
understand we won't fix over night what has been neglected for a century and
more. And that this enthusiastic list is the new kids in a school that others
like myself have been working in to long before you came along. We remember
encouraging Governor O'bannon discussing the plan to establish INPCRP with
encouragement of the Trustees. I must stress that patience is the virtue
here. And that the few Trustees that can attend the conventions have always
realized we can make a difference in the thousands of unmaintained gravesites
in our Townships.
Just this past Wednesday I approached a property owner previously unknown to
me and after we talked they have agreed to allow the Township to restore a
part of their overgrown wooded area back to the cemetery it is underneath the
trees and vines. We can't do it alone. I have learned to include any
resources available in these projects and this includes the Indiana Cemetery
Restoration Project friends and other special interest groups that exist in
this part of the state. We are so blessed to have so many groups to draw from
here locally. The plans for a cemetery commission add a bright future to our
goal in our County. I can sense the attentiveness is catching on.
