I won't go into all the details but some of our family went as observers and
couldn't believe what they were seeing and left. If the casket was broken
for instance what I heard was they just shoved the whole thing into the
reservoir floor grabed the stone and put it at the Mississinewa site. End of
'move'. We don't know for sure exactly who is where needless to say. These
were very religious pioneers almost saintly in their lifestyle. They had come
from Switzerland, the Netherlands, Palatine in Germany..to PA to OH and
finally to IN, Many were ministers from Church of the Brethren some
Mennonites, Lutherans etc. Others were pioneers of Wabash County, Grant Co.,
teachers hard working farmers, large land owners et al. They deserved
better.
as you said a very sad event.. BUT a wake up call for the future as well. It
can happen....and I'll bet more often than you can imagine....

I remember when these graves were moved back in the early 60's
when the
reservoirs came into our area on the Mississenewa and Salamonie
Rivers.........I am certain that the movement of graves and remains was
done
in a slipshod manner.........I don't recall if families were
contacted to
be
present for any of this or not......many of the families had eith
dispersed
or had died out.......a very sad event......
Does anybody know how the movement of cemeteries is conducted today?
