Dear Chris:
Jack Briles and I are crazy about our GPS units. I have a Garmin. He has a
Magellan.
Jack knows a lot more about these gadgets than I do, but he is a big fan of
using the UTM coordinates in lieu of the minutes & seconds, etc. I know
enough about mine to get it to give me UTM coordinates, but haven't learned
how to use the other amazing features.
Regardless of which you choose, when you get home with your readings, go to
www.topozone.com, type in your coordinates and BOOM! You've got a scalable
topographical map of the site. You will probably have to tweak the exact
placement of the red X on the map, but then you can copy-and-paste the URL
from your browser window and create an interactive link from your webpage on
the cemetery to the Topozone map. See many of my Clark County Cemeteries
pages for examples. Here's a sample:

To "copy-and-paste" a URL, use your mouse to highlight the URL (web address).
Once highlighted, hit and hold the CONTROL key and then press the "C" key
{CONTROL+C} to COPY the string of text. Release the keys. Then go to the
webpage you are editing and press CONTROL+V to PASTE the string of text. Use
this process to transfer objects and text between Windows programs.
You might want to search the INPCRP message archives at:
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=INPCRP
for the term "GPS" and see past messages on this subject.

I just bought a GPS (Magellan 315) to help determine locations
of cemeteries in Vanderburgh County. Any useful tips I need to
know?
