Pat, Kyle, and Donna,
When we were writing the bill, I questioned this too. After I thought about
it, I believe it is the right thing to do. Kyle is right. The trustees are
still responsible for these cemeteries and they do have a vested interest in
them. This is a way for the township trustees and the cemetery commissions
to work TOGETHER to preserve our cemeteries. In Henry Co., as Donna said,
there are two trustees on the commission. It works very well. Donna and Mike
Burch are wonderful trustees who really do care about the cemeteries.
Township trustees need to realize that cemetery commissions are a wonderful
RESOURCE for them.
I fear that the trustees are going to read this bill and think that the
cemetery commissions are going to "take away" their duties for cemeteries.
This is not the case. We just want to work together, hence the reason for a
trustee or designee on the commission. I also fear that the trustees will
balk about sending cemetery reports to the commission. This was put in place
so that the commission knows what is being done and by who so that we all
know what is taking place in our cemeteries in regards to maintenance. In
fact, if it would help the trustees, I wouldn't be against the cemetery
commission sending a report to the trustees on what they are doing! The fact
remains that we have too many cemeteries that are not receiving the care
they need and deserve. We have to work together for the sake of these
cemeteries.

I question the part where "a trustee" is supposed to be a
member of the
cemetery commission, or designate someone to represent them.
Which trustee would it be, every county has a number of trustees and
how
would you select one that is really interested and willing to give time to
the commission?
It would also seem they would be a person with a "vested
interest" in one
particular county when it comes time for the commission to
appropriate
cemetery funding for maintenance and restoration.
I think appointees to the cemetery commissions should be
people with no "vested interest" in any township or cemetery.
