If this item were stolen from a grave, wouldn't that be a federal offense or
something? I guess you could presume it was damaged, replaced and the one
Rich got had been discarded and picked up later by someone. But what if it
was stolen?
Maybe there's a grave it should be returned to because no one took the time
to replace an original...

Mark,
Thanks for the info. I was just looking at this one more closely, and it
does have
a broken bracket piece of the frame on the back where it once was
connected. I really hadn't noticed this at the time my wife picked it up.
I suppose it may not be worth the hassle of repairing if it can be replaced
so inexpensively.
So, what have you been up to? Haven't heard from you in a while. Write
me
offline when you can.

Rich,
Nice find Rich. Actually there are reproductions of the marker in cast
bronze or
aluminum still being made by Balch Brothers. They are about 31
dollars.

Subject: [INPCRP] GAR Monument Ornament
Hello All,
I'm looking for someone who may have, at one time or another, come up
missing a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) monument ornament from a
Union
Civil War veteran's grave marker? My wife and I rescued one
from a
garage
sale today as we thought we'd like to see it at least back with
a Yankee
CW
vet somewhere.
The seller allowed as how he got it in an auction lot sometime ago. The
cast brass (or perhaps bronze) star-shaped device has the letters GAR
and
1861 over 1865 dates. I imagine that these are pretty hard to come
by
inasmuch as the last GAR member passed away a long time ago and I'm
pretty
certain that these aren't produced any more. I can provide a
scaled
picture
for verification of the correct size and style someone might be
trying
to
replace. This one seems to be in pretty good shape; although, it
looks
like
it may have been brushed by a riding mower. A fairly large vehicle
or
some
other piece of heavy equipment must have been involved since one of
the
star
points is slightly bent and this is a pretty heavy piece of cast
metal.
We're not interested in any remuneration other than perhaps shipping
costs
to a person needing to return one these to its rightful place in a
cemetery.
PLEASE NO COLLECTORS!
For more information, e-mail me directly.
Best Regards,
Rich Green
