Hello all,
In follow up to the response to Lori Taylor's inquiry regarding the muriatic
acid that was used on the tombstones at the Hopland Cemetery
Sue, I hope no one did that.
Muratic acid is Hydrochloric Acid cut to 20%. Muratic Acid should never be
applied to anything until the object is thoroughly wet. And then it must be
completely removed with a LOT of water. Muratic Acid is used in the masonry
Business to Cut the Lime out of the cement that gets on Brick. It cuts the lime
completely. If this has been applied to Marble or Limestone Tombstones, the fumes
alone will continue to destroy the Stones if it was not HOSED COMPLETELY with
water within 5 minutes. Besides destroying the stones, the fumes are heavier
than air and if you accidentally inhale them, they go to the bottom of your
lungs and destroy them. A splatter in your eye can cause a permanent burn scar
unless flushed in 1 or 2 minutes. Muratic Acid has NO place around the average
person, unless it is put in a swimming pool to raise the pH to normal, if you
know how to handle it.
