These were some of most depressing photos of improper presentation of
pioneer stones since I saw Prospect cemetery in Randolph County,(it was a
Eagle Scout nightmare), a couple of months ago. Although the military
stones look like they were set correctly at Cottrell.
Stones set directly in concrete, metal frames..yikes. I see that all over in
Madison county. I went to Waymire cemetery in Northern Madison County and
it was the same story over and over again....fence posts and concrete
holding stones in place. Same thing in Ridgon cemetery on the Madison-Grant
county line.
Looks like the Good Old Boy Network with their bags of concrete rule
Madison county "restoration".

Hi, INPCRP Folks,
Speaking of heat and hard work, the Madison County Cemetery Commission is
finally finishing the reclamation of the Cottrell Cemetery in Green
Township. Between the legal road blocks and erosion problems, this project
has been six years in the making. Just this year, the actual resetting of
stones could be started by some dedicated and very hard workers Larry Brown
and Herb Justice. They stepped in and filled a very big need.
We have documented with pictures the story of and the restoration process
used at the Cottrell on the Cottrell Cemetery Restoration page of our web
site: <
www.cemeteries-madison-co-in.com/CottrellRestoration.htm>. We
invite everyone to take a look--especially when they need an up-lift. The
Cottrell was truly a worst case scenario and the final product, we feel,
will gratify all concerned.
We are now considering rededication ceremonies: the light at the end of a
very long tunnel, but certainly well worth the effort. When a date is
finalized, I will post an invitation with directions to the event.
Best regards,
Melody Hull
MCCC, Secretary
