The Delaware County Pioneer Cemetery Preservation Committee will be working
in Heath Cemetery, Salem Township, Delaware County this year and probably
next year as well. Later by June we'll be doing some pinning since 90 % of
the pre-civil war markers have been busted into pieces. If you don't have
anyone to mentor by then, we'll certainly give you the chance. By all means
get permission to work on these markers and continue to get proper training.
Your interest is to be commended.

I would like
to know more about this as well, so I'm interested to see what sort of
response
you receive.? I had hoped to attend the cemetery workshop at the Indiana
Historical Society at the end of May, but when I called to register a
number of
weeks ago, I was placed on a waiting list--which is too bad since I've
already been given permission to have that day off of work.
I'm always sad to see broken tombstones in cemeteries. Once they
are broken, the pieces can easily become further damaged or lost.? I've
encountered stacks of random tombstone pieces in more than one cemetery, and
it always makes me feel sad.?
I have two ancestors in my direct line with stones that I would like to
repair:
#1 - Jane ALBIN, d. 8 May 1839, buried in Deer Creek Cemetery, Putnam
County,
Indiana.?
#2 - Sarah MCNARY, d. 12 Oct 1844, buried in Old Greencastle (aka Hanna
St. or
Blackstock) Cemetery, Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana.
Photographs of Jane ALBIN's stone can be found here (next to her husband,
William ALBIN's upright stone):

Her stone isn't actually broken, but is on the ground.? That's one of the
reason I'd like to learn more about best practices...to know if it's best
to
reset the stone, or to leave it on the ground.? My fear of leaving it on
the ground is that at some point, it could become buried or damaged by
mowing
equipment.
A photographs of Sarah MCNARY's stone can be found here:

Thankfully, it's not broken in a place that contains any vital information
(names/dates/etc), but I would still like to repair the stone so the top
doesn't
become lost.? It's on the DePauw University campus, and I worry...
I have so much to learn about all this...
Since I may not be fortunate enough to attend this year's seminar at the
Indiana Historical Society, can anyone recommend books or websites to help
me learn more about pioneer cemeteries and older tombstones, burial
practices, etc?
Sincerely,
Megan McNary

I just learned from a friend that a headstone in my old family Cemetery in
Jennings County is broken. I have not seen it yet. I am going down next
week. I
do have pictures of the stone prior to this damage. What can I do to get
it
repaired? Here is a link to pictures of the Cemetery the damaged stone is
the
one for Benjamin Zener who died July 29, 1869.
