Subject: Re: [INPCRP] Hancock County Cemetery Vandalism
I do not know the source, I assume in a local paper on-line:
HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. - Vandals hit historic Olvey Cemetery in Hancock
County, toppling 60 tombstones. The cemetery is now abandoned, but
many of the headstones date back to the Civil War era.
Families members who have ancestors buried there wonder why vandals
hurt precious property.
"We put stars where the tombstones were," said 14-year-old Kelsey True.
For 4-H projects, Kelsey researches her family's history. "We just go
around and find pictures and what's really interesting is the obituaries."
"Alsie Chapel is great, great, six times grandparents," said Kelsey's
mother Cindy True.
She takes a picture next to the tombstones each year as proof to the
4-H judges. But the cemetery now looks much different. Some of the
headstones have been toppled over and even some of the tombstone
bases have been removed from the ground. In all about 60 tombstones
have been damaged.
Hancock County detectives say it happened this week but they are
investigating some possible leads.
"I don't know what the thrill is. You know, doing something like
this, and it's so disrespectful," said Green Township Trustee Sharon
Brown. "I feel bad for the families."
Brown says it will cost more than $10,000 to repair, money that's not
in the budget. But the city will repair as much as they can this year.
"It's sacred ground. They could go in there and have a party. They
didn't need to knock anything over," said Cindy. "It's just
malicious."
Kelsey and her mother tried to fix some of the toppled headstones,
but many were just too heavy. They hope the pictures will help the
city when it starts repairing the broken stones, especially if some
of the headstones were moved. The pictures will help put them back in
their proper spots.
