Hey, Rich, the unmarked grave you spoke about now has an unmarked cross on
it, and we found a temporary funeral home marker buried there, no info
left on it, but it did verify the burial. Thanks for coming that day.

Hi Kyle,
I'm sorry I missed you too. I just didn't have much time to hang around
that day, I have been very busy.
I was visiting the North Star cemetery in your neck of the woods to
collect comparative GPR data on Newton County soils. In what little
spare time I have, I am traveling around to various parts of Indiana
and collecting GPR data in small sections of older cemeteries. This is
an effort to study well-marked, similar aged burials found in areas
with differing soil types. By examining short rows of mid 19th century
graves found in different soil conditions, I am attempting to develop
regional comparative data of these older grave sites that typically
consist of less distinct features and disturbances.
Incidentally, I have already discovered several mis-marked or unmarked
graves while making these first few investigations in relatively small,
arbitrarily chosen areas of older cemeteries. The Newton County
cemetery was no exception. I only looked at a two row area of about 20'
x 40' and found two mis-marked and one unmarked grave. The unmarked
grave had a metal casket and was a no doubter! This has happened on
some of the other sites as well. It makes you wonder just how much
error there is since even small, randomly selected areas are found in
this condition?
I was also talking to the Jackson Township Trustee that day about a new
cemetery design and lay out; although, I haven't heard back from her on
this just yet.
Hope I catch up with you next time through Newton County.
Best Regards,
Rich Green
