Yesterday afternoon I went to Lindley Cemetery to mow and discovered it had
been vandalized within the past week, probably over the Labor Day weekend. I
estimated 84 markers were broken or tipped over. This cemetery is next to
Kokomo Reservoir and a favorite fishing hole and party place. I had my poor
relief people rake and clean the entire 4 acre perimeter just 2 weeks ago, it
looked so nice. Now it has empty liquor and beer bottles, hot dog and brat plastic
packages, etc. spread all over the ground also. I called the county police
and they came out to make a report. I also called the Kokomo Tribune and they
will run an article in the paper mid week with a picture.
Today we had a clean up day with the United Way Day of Caring, we had 4
people come out to help and we swept grass off of stones from mowing and removed
dirt/weeds from the cement slabs on the ground.
Now for the hard part. How do I plan on getting the markers up and and/or
repaired? I know I will need to order the putty stuff in the bucket but I don’t
remember the name of it and where to get it. My husband and I took the
beginner class on restoration and we know just enough to get us in trouble. J My
husband said we will need the sand stuff also, do you know the name of it and
where we could also get it? Also the repair glue stuff for the civil war type
markers that were snapped in two.
The perplexing thing is the vandals knocked over the really big markers, not
the small ones. How long did it take to knock over 84 good size markers?
Mark and Helen graciously came to this cemetery almost 4 years ago and evaluated
this for us on how to begin restoration…they would be proud of what we have
accomplished since then. My township does not have the finances to pay to have
this repaired professionally, I did not have insurance either other than
liability. This will probably have to be done by volunteers. It will get done but
it is such a HUGE set back. so sad
Any comments and suggestions on where to begin is asked for and appreciated.
