Dear Jack:
This one is not in Indiana, but it is certainly a very creative way of
preserving a burial site. The developer left the cemetery in place but
graded down the surrounding soil to build the shopping mall parking lot in
Avondale (DeKalb Co.), GA. I drove past the cemetery every day for more
than 10 years before I found out what it was.
See

My point: It **CAN** be done!
Although it may not be entirely "on point" because it was an exclusion on
the Deed (and perhaps specifically deeded out, I can't remember),
Fowler-Mundy Cemetery (also in Marion Co.) would be a good example of
building around a cemetery. I don't have any recent pictures of
Fowler-Mundy; maybe Jack Sandlin has some of those. See:

For examples of how NOT to do it, see:

Jack, more info on Adams Family Cemetery in Clark Co., IN (court order for
its disinterment in place since February 2001; it may already be GONE) is
found at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~incccpc/AdamsFamilyCem.html
This one was Deeded in 1890 to New Chapel Church, a number of miles away.
And then there is Whalen Cemetery, also in Clark Co., IN (court order in
place since 5/29/2001), which 3-grave cemetery is an exception on the
developer's deed. See

Grisly story of murder and suicide associated with this one.
I'm sure our friends in the SE end of the State (Pike Co. area) have plenty
of horror stories about "portable cemeteries".

Subject: [INPCRP] DEVELOPERS THAT HAVE SPARED A CEMETERY
Does annyone on the list have any verifyiable information on a Developer
that
has saved a cemetery in the state of Indiana and incorprated it into
his
project. Ben Hershberg Southern Indiana News Bureau corespondant of the
Louisville Courier Journal would like to put it in his story. I spent 2
hrs
with him and a photographer, and the New Albany Twp. Trustee
disscussing
and
looking at sites that have been moved, destroyed, and the one saved.
He
says
If one can or will do it, why can't more instead of moving them.
If you
know
of such a cemetery let me know. The Indy Star is also interested.
(The
Trustee carrys a petition with him to get everyone he talks to, to sign)
