Jack,
As for trying to get a cemetery commission organized, get as much support
from the public as possible. Speaking at the Floyd Co. Historical Society
will be a wonderful opportunity to educate the audience about the importance
of pioneer cemeteries. Not only talk about WHY they are important (i.e.
genealogical information, records, headstones as a form of art, history,
heritage, etc....), but above all, the pioneers deserve our RESPECT. We all
have a MORAL obligation to see the cemeteries restored and preserved. Pull
on their heartstrings a bit; and I bet they would be willing to help any way
they can. Maybe you might want to start a petition to form a cemetery
commission. If you don't want to go that route, ask the audience to write
letters to the county commissioners to show their support - have their
addresses handy. Maybe a local newspaper reporter can attend the meeting a
do an article?
You can do it! Just speak from your heart and you will win theirs.
Sincerely,
Angela Tielking

Subject: [INPCRP] Historical Societies Information
I have been invited to speak at the Floyd Co. Historical
Society
meeting in March. Does the Various Historical Societies in other
counties
take an interest in the Older, or Pioneer Cemeteries. Should they join in
with me to try for a cemetery Commission. I don't know exactly how far I
should go in that direction. They have talked about Laws for Pioneer
cemeteries, but as of yet have not made, in my opinion, any concerted
effort
to follow up on any of this.
The Southern Indiana Genealogical Society (SIGS) have some
volunteers recording the readily accessible cemeteries and putting these
in
book form for sale. But as far as Floyd Co cemeteries go, that is it.
In a
year and a half no one from either group have offered any assistance to
me.
Nor has anyone else in the county, except Tom Cannon, the New Albany
Twp.
Trustee. And that was mostly moral support. If anyone has any ideas how I
should approach the Groups in my talk I would appreciate suggestions. I
know
some members but not that well. They know me well enough to ask me to
speak.
Thanks for any moral support, or suggestions.
