Jan: The Salem Cemetery has been restored by John Walters and crew in
2007. The directions are to turn East on CR 650 N about .25 or just across
the ditch and turn North following the route west of the field along the
creek bed there.
You might contact John Walters to ask him about access. I know there was
some
desention as one of the landowners claimed ownership of the cemetery. I
don't know
if that has been resolved or not. I was back there in 2007 and didn't see
any do
not trepass signs. That may refer to the field and not the cemetery access.

Subject: [INPCRP] Indiana Cemetery Laws
Hi everyone!
I seem to remember a few years back, there was new legislation in Indiana
that required landowners to provide access to old cemeteries. Am I right?
If so, where would I be able to read this?
One reason I'm asking: About four years ago, my husband and I were there
and were able to drive back to Salem Cemetery (located in the vicinity of
213 and 650N, north of Windfall). After spending an hour or so, with our
car parked precariously on 213, with me on one side of the creek with
paper and tape recorder and my husband on the other side yelling off names
and dates (boy, what a run-on sentence!), we drove down 650 and discovered
a mown path at the edge of the woods, straight back to the cemetery (and
the mosquitoes are terrible back there in August!). We drove back and ran
around taking photos and swatting bugs. And, at the time, it was in much
better shape than it was when I was a child. Although I've been reading
an old string on this list about "Ingress and Egress," that listed this
cemetery as requiring restoration, I can tell you it was really abandoned
and overgrown when my brother and I used to look for it through the woods
as my parents drove on 213. But!
when we were there in 2004, most of the growth had been cleared out.
Anyway, last month my brother and I were in Tipton County, and he wanted
to see the cemetery up close. So I directed him down 650, and when we got
to the path, there was a big "No Trespassing" sign there. I thought we
were legally allowed to visit the cemetery because of some newer
regulations, but I'm guessing I was wrong? Was the landowner allowed to
NOT allow us back there?
Thanks,
Jan Rader
