Marilynn,
I have relatives buried there as well and have been kind of upset with the
condition for many years. There was at one time a fallen tree covering
several graves in the back that did a lot of damage. It layed there for
quite some time. I read some of the stones 5-6 years ago. Those stones are
no longer there today. Some even towards the front are gone. I assume the
church is still responsible, although I have not talked to them. They had a
fire which gutted the church a decade ago and I don't know what their
condition is now. Should be better after a good fire. You don't have to look
very far north to find a lot of them that look like this or even worse. I
guess they think this is the standard to go by. Maple Hill (I thought it was
Oak Hill) in Patoka is not much better. I have a receipt from 1932 for
perpetual care that they will not honor. Does not include fixing of
monuments they say. I was told I am lucky that they keep the grass mowed.
Pitiful!
Jon

Subject: [INPCRP] Cemetery in Patoka

Hello All.......
I just returned from an extremely short trip home to P'ton/Fort Brach for
the
funeral of my aunt....so I went to both Maple Hill and the Patoka Cemetery
to
lay flowers ...the latter is the one to the east of the main street....old
Hiway 41.
What a surprise at Patoka....headstones [really really old] sunk into the
ground and the writing totally gone..others fading or faded.....a top
ornament piece toppled over and "replaced" at an angle..not on top, but
resting on the headstone.....so the question is..who is responsible for
that
cemetery? It has been eons since I have been there, but after reading all
the e-mails on this listserve....I am obviously much more aware of your
work.
Thank you one and all for your time.
Marilynn in New Mexico

England
and Victorian contemporary of Benjamin Disraeli:
"Show me the manner in which a nation or community
cares for its dead and I will measure with mathematical
exactness the tender mercies of its people, their
respect for the laws of the land, and their loyalty
to high ideals."
