Sounds like the camera has something called fill flash - it really is
amazing what it can do to a subject - if you guys still have a manual
for a digital slr - look it up - sometimes it comes automatic sometimes
not depends on the settings - also distance to the subject might matter

Nicole: That sounds like something to know. I take pictures of before
and
after each stone is repaired for records. I never used the flash
because of
daylight and the closeness of the stone. Am interested in knowing more.
Thanks.

Subject: [INPCRP] New Technology Unreadable Stones
Hello all,
I do a lot of lurking here, but the topic of new technology really
caught
my
eye. I am an officer for the Westfield Washington Historical Society
in
Westfield, IN.
This summer, we had an Eagle Scout come out and read our Anti-Slavery
friends cemetery. He used the flash on the camera in a way that
allowed
all
of our stones to be read. The Eagle Scout was working with someone in
FL
on
how to use the flash.
If anyone is interested, I will try to find the contact info and post
it.
