My great-aunt Nora kept her father's ashes (he died in 1946) in her hall
closet until a couple of year before she passed away in 1974 at the age of
92 years old. I never knew he was there! I didn't find out until after I
read Centennial in 1975 and wanted to chart my own family on a cattle
breeding chart!
We didn't know where Nora had buried him other than at Pioneer Cemetery in
San Bernardino (CA). When I checked with the cemetery they sent me to this
grave where this woman's headstone was! There was no marker for
great-grandfather at all. The cemetery couldn't explain it to me.
Took me a couple of years to figure out that the woman he shared a grave
with was his mother who had remarried! (Good grief....) Now the cemetery
won't let me put a marker on the grave for him, even though he's a Spanish
American War veteran! "One marker per grave...!"
I have half a mind to disinter his ashes and have him moved to where his
wife was buried (she died in 1890) and is now without a marker and put a
proper marker on both of them. Trouble is, they can only show me the
approximate location of her grave! This is a county public cemetery!
Go figure... Personally, I'm going to burn (no matter what!) and then be
scattered down the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River (in El Dorado County),
where I'll eventually end up out at sea!
Sue

I agree...even $3000. sounds like a lot for what it is. and then
there is
still the memorial or token stone or whatever.
Unbelievable to me. I guess I am totally out of the loop.
Maybe I'll just tell my daughter to stick me in a jar and carry me around
with them, ha.
I don't know what I want. We have lived all over the place and with the
mobile families of today it really is a problem. There is no one
destination as in years gone by.
Family plots are almost a lost art, as it were.
Thanks for your input.
allbest,
Sue Noe
