I know what you are going through. When we started here in Tipton County in
2002 we tried to get funding from the County Commissioners. No luck. So we
just footed the bills for the first two-three months until people knew we
were around and then we started receiving some small donations. We put an
article in our local newspaper stating that the cemetery we were in was
being restored and showed some before and after pictures. You will get lots
of people who think you are doing a good thing by fixing the cemeteries but
no one wants to help. But if you can stick it out for a while then you find
support. No one wants to support something that is not going on yet. As I
stated before, we got a grant, but only after repairing for almost a year.
You might contact your local county highway and see if they would donate
your crushed gravel.
Let us know about a work day. We went over to Greentown last fall to help
out. We might do the same for you this fall.

You are not alone in your plight. One thing I forgot to mention that
might
help is to find a sympathetic reporter at a local newspaper who might be
willing to do an article on your endeavor and the trouble you are having.
Maybe
L.A. can refer you to someone at the Lafayette Journal and Courier since
it
would have a larger circulation area than the Frankfort paper. (presuming
Frankfort has a paper). A person who would have done a good job for you
on that
was Kevin Cullen, but he no longer is at the paper. No one, including
the
genealogical society or the township trustee, will like having their names
in
the paper as being unwilling to help in the cause. And hey....they're
not
helping you now so you really have nothing to lose.

Yes, it does, but you have one thing I don't have. Support. I asked the
local genealogical for an endorsement, but they were unwilling to give
it.
Without that, I am not sure setting up a booth asking for contributions
would
be the thing to do, even though it sounds like a good idea. I have not
had any
luck with the township trustee. No money, I am told.
The descendants I have located are not in the area and though they have
said
they would contribute, nothing has come.
I am considering contacting the local history teacher to see if there may
be
interest in a student research project related to the cemetery. Perhaps
in
the spring. Maybe that will generate some interest.
All suggestions are welcomed.
