ATLANTA -- Gwinnett County Police say a grave mistake may have helped them
catch a cemetery vandal. Investigators say Ezekiel DeJesus-Rodriguez was
knocking over grave markers when one fell on top of him. Police found him
screaming for help.
"So often they get away, but this one got caught," explained Sandra Cagle.
It's the only bit of news that helps Sandra Cagle cope with the thought of
someone desecrating her family's plot at the Luxomni Church Cemetery in
Lilburn.
"You have my mother and my father, my aunt and my uncle, another uncle is
there as well as my grandparents," said Cagle.
She even brought photos of her parents and her grandparents to put faces
to
the family names on the tombstones. It was early Saturday morning when
police say 24-year-old Ezekiel DeJesus Rodriguez toppled nearly 10 grave
markers at the cemetery - including those of Sandra's family.
"All these tombs have been disrupted in some fashion," she explained.
But one of the tombs - still toppled over - would be the last tomb police
say he would disturb.
"The twist is that he was hurt and that he was captured. He's in the
hospital waiting to go to jail," said Cagle.
The stone fell on his leg, crushing it. He screamed in the dark, possibly
for hours, until someone called police. He was caught - literally - but
for
Sandra, the question remains, "What satisfaction did he get out of this?
Because all he's done is hurt people."
Most of the headstones are upright again. Sandra Cagle says she plans to
follow the case and make sure the guilty party is punished to the full
extent of the law.
