Greetings from California....
Without seeing the stone of which you mention it would be hard for me to
say it's not sandstone. It wouldn't seem to me that sandstone, which is
so darn soft, would ever have been used for a cemetery marker. If
something in California looked like it might be sandstone, I would more
believe it was a really old marble marker made from inferior stone. The
inferior marble in California spalls and crystallizes really bad.
Are there any local monument dealers that might assist you? We have a
wonderful dealer - RUHKALA Monument Co. in Rocklin, Placer County, CA.
The family has been in the monument business here since 1889. It's still
family owned. They are a terrific support for our preservation efforts.
Best regards,

Does anyone know which products may be used to clean sandstone? I
took the
Boone County class last year and have the papers/recipes from
Fannin/Lehner
Preservation Consultants but there is nothing on sandstone. I have a
very,
very long (8') Tree Trunk Headstone I believe is made of sandstone
thoroughly covered in moss -- it really looks like a cut tree! We
almost
went by it when we did an inventory of the utterly destroyed cemetery.
I
plan to use the poultice Minxie taught us to use on the headstone, but
then
I will need to clean every crevice and all the dirt--would like to
have the
products readily available when we get to the final cleaning stage.
