Hi Group,
This is to let you know what has been done on the clean up of our Peckinpaugh
Cemetery that is located below Cape Sandy, in Crawford Co. Indiana. I had
contacted Dennis Pekinpaugh who is the manager of Muzler Rock Crushing
Quarry, that ownes the land around the cemetery. We talked on the phone and
he really doesn't know much about the family, but he was so kind as to take a
couple of his workers to the site and did a great job of cleaning out trees
that had grown inside the fence as well as cut the tall weeds around the
inside as well as outside. It was in such bad shape when I visited there in
Sept. of 1999. He has sent me pictures to show the work that was done. I was
so happy to see this much taken care of.
I had written to the Crawford Co. Trustee and let him know that I knew it was
his responsibility to take care of these pioneer cemeteries, I sent pictures
of what it looked like in 1999. I also sent letters and pictures to the Co.
Commissioner's. Well I received a very nice letter back from one of the
Commissioner's David Sillings :
" Thank you for your letter and the pictures of the Peckinpaugh Cemetery. You
may be assured that I will get someone to work on this site and see if we can
get it cleaned up and maintained in a more professional manor. I am sorry
that it was in such a shape as it was when you were there in Sept. 1999. I
will try to keep you informed of the progress. Thanks again for you letter."
Sincerely
David L. Sillings Crawford C. Commissioner
I have gotten a group of Peckinpaugh's descendants together and we will all
meet in Crawford Co. on May 20th & 21st. and visit the site, and do any work
that needs to be done. There will be at least 12 of us, and all from
different states... I live in Oregon, and there will be some from Indiana,
Ohio, Tenn., and maybe other states as well. Most of these have never seen
the cemetery, so I am looking forward to showing them where our ancestor's
are resting.
Take care,
Bev. Winbolt
