While we are on this subject, and it looks like I'm about the only one who
is, one other note about government headstones is that I did not know or
realize until recently that if a veteran was proven to be buried in a mass
grave and the body was not reinterred to another burial place the Federal
Government will provide a memorial stone (not a monument) which is identical
to the other to be placed in a National Cemetery. So, remember when you're
out there paying respects to your great-grandfather who was killed in the
Civil War, etc. His stone might be in St. Louis, but his remains are still
in Tennessee. Only the records can tell you for sure if he is actually
buried there. And of course, some can't. I just always assumed they went
together, for some reason.
