I've been following the 'removal of paint' discussion the last couple of
weeks and just want to add my thoughts. While preservation of the original stone
is the first choice, it may come down to realizing that the original is not
restorable and a replacement may be more appropriate. The success story here
is that apparently the location of where the stone belongs has been found
and the grave can once again be marked. Whether or not it is with the original
grave marker is less of an issue at that point. A pat on the back goes to
all who were involved in seeing that this young pioneer boy's burial location
was located.

Subject: [INPCRP] Paint on a tombstone
This is a website that has volunteers enter burials and photos of
graveyards. They also have an active discussion forums, one of my
favorite is cemetery preservation.
I can post a query about what to use, but they are very conservative,
because tombstones can be harmed even with good intentions. I'd advise no
ammonia, TSP, or drills with nylon brush. What to use, I don't know, but
I think it wise to check first.
I can report back, or feel free to check the discussion forums.
