On stacked monuments, it was generally left on the top part of the base stone near a
corner of the base. However, Saturday I found one in eastern Clinton County where it took
up the whole front side of the base stone. Nothing like advertising. Sometimes there is
no mark. The mark may also be at the base of the main body of the stone. They can be
just about anywhere. I also learned Saturday that Lott VanSickle was a licensed agent to
sell white bronze markers. They were much cheaper than regular headstones and made from
molds. So when you see one, you pretty much have seen most of them.
While you are looking, please let me know if you find any that say David Paul or Paul,
Collins (Harman & Hiram B.) and Boyland. It appears the Van Sickles purchased the
Collins' business which was later sold to Boyland. David Paul is another engraver
listed in the Clinton County census, but I have yet to determine if he had his own
business or not. I found one stone Saturday that had the name Paul in the lower right
corner of the front face of the stone, which suggests he may have had his own business,
but I have to do some more research.
Thanks for your help!

Hi Cathi - Was there a specific place that the family placed the mark?? I'm not sure
where to look on the stones!

Hey, everyone,
I am attempting to research the above men who were headstone engravers in
Frankfort, Clinton County.? It appears this occupation became part of the family
by 1860 or so (if not earlier) until around 1920 or perhaps longer.? If any of
you find a stone marked Van Sickle & Bro. please let me know.? I would
appreciate knowing the name of the cemetery and where it is located.
Thank you!
