Subject: [INPCRP] Marble Cemetery in New York City
Found the website for a REALLY unusual "Marble Cemetery" in
New York
City:
http://www.marblecemetery.org/
All of the 2,060 burials are in 156 below-ground vaults made of
solid white Tuckahoe marble. Most of the interments took place
between 1830 and 1870. Descendants of the original owners can still
be buried here. The vaults are in pairs, accessible by descending
down a shaft shared by two separate vaults.
This is the oldest public, non-sectarian cemetery in the city of New
York. Descendants of the owners may still be buried here. The 156
solid marble vaults were built completely underground as a health
precaution. Though no markers are on the ground, the names of the
original owners from each family are on marble tablets in the
surrounding walls. The cemetery is a New York City Landmark and is
on the National Register of Historic Places.
