I spent nearly a year and a half locating the Cemeteries in Floyd
County
Co. and coming up with a Format for Recording their Locations so that anyone
can find them. I have a Topographical Map page, with the page number,
cemetery number and name for each cemetery that are numbered from (1-137),
with all of the names arranged in Alphabetical order. I have very Explicit
Driving Directions from the Court House to each one. We only have three
Directions, the Ohio River is South. This is all contained in 2 seperate
Volumes with a seperate complete County wide Index which indicates which
Township they are found in, as well as the page number they can be found on
in the 2 volumes.
Volume # 1 includes New Albany and Georgetown Townships, Volume #
2 contains Greenville, Franklin, and Lafayette Townships. The Cemeteries are
Listed overall in the Index from 1-137, then broken down and dived into
Townships. The pages in the Townships are Listed starting with number 1
continuing on through both Volumes. Believe it or not, this has been a very
trying Job by my self. I did not have one single person Volunteer to help on
the Locations, or to help work out the Formats for the Index and the Books.
I used a lot of paper and ink, and wore out a Printer. Plus all of the hours
of Trial and Error on my computer. I had no ideas when I started, only
guidelines I worked out as I went along. I had no help what so ever, although
Newspaper Articles were in The New Albany Tribune, the Indiana Section of the
Louisville Courier Journal, The Corydon Democrat, and the Jeffersonville
Evening News. I recieved calls and E-mail congratulating me for what I was
doing. But not even spare time offers of help. I finished despite this
because of sheer determination, and a genuine caring about our early
Pioneers, and our Local History.
NO, my Information will not be on Line. Every thing on line
sooner or later ends up on Ancestry, and you are charged for it. We all have
our own ideas on how the recording should be done, and we are all working
very hard to see that the cemeteries are recorded. My information is
available freely at the New Albany-Floyd County Library, Local History Room.
Anyone wishing to find a Floyd County cemetery can get the directions at the
Library and be at the cemetery in 20 minutes or less. It's only about 10
miles in the three directions to the Library. If anyone is interested in the
cemeteries in Floyd County they are Available to Anyone.
My books do not have any NAMES of anyone buried in the cemeteries.
This Has, and will be done by the Southern Indiana Genealogical, or
Historical Socities. That was never my Goal. Locating some of the cemeteries
took to much time as it was. As far as financing, I did not recieve one cent
from anyone or any Group or Orgizination. I paid my own Expenses, which came
to over $ 4,000. The Topography
in Floyd County Rivals or surpasses any in Indiana for innacessability. That
is what took me so long. Once you leave New Albany you are in the Hills. And
we have a nice supply of the Southern Copperhead Snake in these Hills. Just
giving an idea of what I have been doing in my spare (Semi-retired ) time,
instead of vacationing. If you read this, I hope you understand my devotation
to my work, along with repairs and cleaning. Sincerily,
Jack E.Briles Sr.
