How does everyone go about resetting the leaning slab tombstones ?
I still think using packed gravel (#53) that is not in full contact
with the stone works, however there have to be other, more modern
methods used by the people on this list. I would like to hear other
methods (cost effective especially) and idea's. We are planning a big
spring offensive in Putnam County this year that will focus on isolated
graveyards. I am afraid that methods have improved and I have been
left behind.

Lee,
I assume you are talking about a leaning tablet that has nor is requiring a
slotted base. The rule of thumb, is if you can bury one third of the stone
and still stay one inch below the last engraving it will not require a
slotted base.
I use a pea gravel and sand mix," 1 part sand to 1part pea stone". If the
tablet is a tall one, layer some brick or flat stone, adding the sand and
pea stone 2 or 3 inches, leaving at least 4 inches of tamped soil to finish
up.
Dig on the opposite side of the lean and try not to disturb the pacted
earth on the other side.
Things to remember are not to tug or pull on the stone ,they will snap.I
dig with metal shovels carefully until close to the stone and then use
plastic scoops to finish with.
Remember to think marker friendly tools.
When finishing tamping the soil think water shed and tamp the soil into a
slope away from the stone.
Hope this was some help,if not ask more.
