Jack, could you go into more detail on your "cemetery measurements"--how far
apart are the rows, how long the rows, etc.?

Rick,
Like any thing else, we have to have some guidelines, regardless of wether
or not they work out.
Otherwise what would I go by if I only found the one Fieldstone marker.
How would I take one Acre of ground that is covered with leaves 3-5 inches
deep and try to find more. This cemetery does not have a single Tombstone to
work from. We found the Fieldstone by sheer luck walking around looking for
Depressions that indicate Grave Shafts.and spot raking leaves. Doing this we
lucked out.
Now to what I personal refer to as "Cemetery Measurements", Graves vary from
3 to 4 feet running
North- South. Most stones Running East - West will vary from 8 to 9 feet.
I use 3.5 feet North - South, and 8.5 East - West This is about as
close as you can get laying out a Blank Cemetery. Some rows are different in
old Pioneer cemeteries. But I find if I Drive 2 ft stakes in the ground and
paint the top half Fluorescent Orange, then use my Sighting Compass, I can get
awfully close. Some old cemeteries have a slight bend in the Long part because
in the fall and winter the sun sets slightly farther to the south. Still
setting in the west, but slightly off the summer settings. If the first row in a
cemetery has this slight bend then chances are the rest will to because the
others probably were measured off the first.
These Measurements work for me. I run a string in this one, using 3 Stakes
for a total length of 150 feet (that is all that looked used) and I found 2
more Fieldstones in 2 out of 4 rows. If it works, fine use the Measurements,
if it doesn't, don't use them. If any one has a better idea, PLEASE let me
know. I can change. Do what works for YOU.
