I use
Topozone.com for my topographical maps to pinpoint a burial site from
an overhead view. I use GPS (Global Positioning System) I have a Magellan
Hand Held Positioner. I use UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator Grid) readings
to pin point the site, then I click my mouse arrow after I match the numbers
on the screen with the ones I have taken from the center of the Cemetery on
my hand held unit, and it puts a cross hair target on the location. Before
May 2, 2000, this was not to accurate, but on that date they turned off the
selectivity, making it accurate enough to very easily pinpoint the Site.
Along with this I give directions from New Albany from 1 of 3 locations near
the New Albany/Floyd County Library where this type information is kept in
the Indiana Room. depending on which way I have to go. The directions are
very specific, it can be in a certain direction, then the necessary turns,
then down to the 10ths. of a mile, turn right at a certain amount of feet
past a certain rd, turn in go X number of feet, turn Left or Right go so many
feet and you are there. All you do is follow the map and directions. After a
demonstration, this is very simple, but I agree, now it sounds complicated.
If it was I would still be out in the woods. Keep in mind that others use
different means. I have asked several if they could find the cemetery I
showed them. All said absolutely, unless a rd was closed. Well, you can't win
em all. I hope this answers your question. Like a computer, you have to
learn some method of finding Cemeteries with better directions then I have
gotten so far.
