The two bills of which we are aware that have been introduced to the 2001
General Assembly have BOTH been referred to the House Ways and Means
Committee:
HB 1758:
http://www.state.in.us/legislative/bills/2001/IN/IN1758.1.html
and
HB 1960:
http://www.state.in.us/legislative/bills/2001/IN/IN1960.1.html
To my knowledge, we as a group have not have much contact with the members of
this Committee and they very likely do not fully comprehend the true nature of
the problem of pioneer cemeteries in this State.
We did a pretty good job of explaining the unique problems of pioneer
cemeteries to the House Natural Resources, Agriculture and Rural Development
Committee a couple of years ago when we made numerous appearances in
Indianapolis to testify before that Committee as well as the Senate Natural
Resources Committee on various pending bills.
It would certainly appear from Jack and Rich's careful examination of HB 1758
and HB 1960 will NOT benefit Indiana's thousands of "lost and forgotten"
pioneer cemeteries.
Please decide for yourself where you stand on the subject of these two bills.
First, read the text of the bills and make up your own mind. Then, we need to
communicate with the members of this Committee about our concerns. Those of
us who were on board in 1999 can remember how quickly a bill can die in
Committee. If there is sufficient objection (especially if it comes from the
right quarters), a bill can die silently in Committee.
There are, as of 1/27/2001, a total of 167 subscribers to the INPCRP e-mail
group. Trust me, if the Members of this Committee hear from HALF that number
of people concerned about pioneer cemeteries in Indiana, they will pay
attention.
PLEASE educate yourself on these bills and then pick up your phone, pick up a
pen or send an e-mail to the House members listed below. Speak up and be part
of the process to protect these sites.
You can write to any Indiana Representative at:
Indiana House of Representatives
200 W. Washington Street
Indianapolis, IN 46204-2786
You can telephone any Indiana Representative at:
(317) 232-9600
(800) 382-9842 [tollfree in Indiana]
Or you can reach them by e-mail (see Members' names below). However, in the
past, we have had trouble sending e-mail to certain members of the House and
Senate. Just in case, I have also listed each Representative's web page
address. There are on-line forms there for sending e-mail to these
individuals. If you send a message and it bounces back to you, go to the
respective webpages and send your message from there.
If you write a message to one Representative and want to send the same message
to another member, all you have to do is use your mouse to highlight the text
of your message, press CONTROL and the C key simultaneously, start your second
message, click in the box where you type the message and press CONTROL and the
V key simultaneously. This will "PASTE" in the highlighted text that you
COPIED from the original message.
