Hi LA,
Just curious as to why burning in the Fall would be any different than the
Spring? Personally, I had hoped that there would be an effort to abandon
the prairie preserve altogether and plan for future preservation of the
cemetery? I believe that the Township Trustee (while presently lacking
funding for Granville) exhibited an interest in its condition and future
maintenance when I spoke with him. But again, I admittedly have been too
busy to follow up on this since Summer.
As you are I'm sure aware, the "prairie preserve" in Granville Cemetery has
apparently not been well managed with the exception of overseeing the yearly
burnings. Some of the vegetation found in the cemetery this Spring is not
natural prairie and much of it is not even indigenous to this continent.
And then there were the many rodent burrows undermining grave markers and
unearthing human remains. Had these conditions gone unreported, we can only
guess as to how the site would have continued to deteriorate under the less
than watchful eye of the DNR personnel responsible for the Granville
cemetery/prairie preserve. There is a very large prairie preserve in the
newly formed Prophetstown State Park here in Tippecanoe County, and as far
as I know no one is buried in it. This half-acre seems both redundant and
unnecessary given that it has been perennially mismanaged.
Wouldn't you agree that enough time has elapsed (more than 6 months) for at
least the initial stages of planning to have taken place? Trapping the
critters this year was a good start; however, if this is all that will be
accomplished and the site is permitted to return to it's former state of
annual burning maintenance, we can probably anticipate more of the same
kinds of unnecessary damage to the Granville cemetery.
At the time of the original posts on this subject there were several people
that showed and interest, some of whom I recall were families of people
buried at Granville, I am very sorry that I managed to lose the dozen or so
e-mail messages from these folks and sure hope that they will see this
current discussion.

The DNR did set up traps after the spring visit and
they caught 4 groundhogs this summer and one possum.
I ask Jeannie if they would consider burning the grasses
this fall instead of waiting until spring. She was going
to check with the folks who are in charge of burning.
I don't expect to hear from her until next month.
