Heath Cemetery Workday update
Report after May 3 workday
Probing was the main item on the agenda. Worked from 8:30 to noon.
Great upper body work out. One of the first finds was a beer can by Gary
Miller! I lost count the slotted bases we found. My guess would be about 9.
Was able to read some never before recorded markers! Found lots of broken
marker peices. I believe 6 stacked markers in one site. Karen reminds me
that this counts as only one find not six. Now where do they go? Some
research needed. Out of rubble and chaos will become beauty and honor. One
marker of the stack a Belinda (BJ) Levingston in excellent condition. One
huge tree marker down with the only name showing as "terbl" (what a terrible
name) when uncovered the unseen letters became (Pe)ter B. L(utz). Tripod to
the rescue in future workdays.
Many thanks to Tommy Crawford, Salem Township Trustee who had a load
of pea gravel and sand 50/50 delivered to the top of the hill at the Heath
Cemetery. Many thanks to Karen Batty who let us use her water and garage to
store the tools and materials we have. The trailer couldn't make it up the
hill, after the hard rains, so it is still out at MansfieldPark.
The hard plastic trowels really came in handy. The rain on Friday
really helped make our work much easier. Next workday is Saturday May 17 at
8:00 am. If interested in helping out let know so I'll know how many to
prepare for. I'll have to leave a little early to participate in Muncie's
Armed Forces Day Parade. If you need a map let me know.
Don't know if there is marking robbing "on the books" as being as illegal
or not. Regardless the Center Township Manfield Park groundskeeper found a
marker of a little 1 yr old boy who died in 1861 and placed in our trailer.
The marker was spray painted black and used as devil worship
(pentagon/circle). I'll try to find out where this marker goes. I believe
the boys lastname was Demere.
Connie took several before pictures that will hopefully prove to be very
beneficial for future education and inspiration.
My sincere thanks to all who participated,
Mark Kreps
