Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Lee,
It's good news all around. Mike Lewman is a descendant of the original grantors of land for the cemetery, and he has returned to the county to live. He and a few other folks who have done mowing and other caregiving have decided to put together an association to maintain the cemetery into the future. They have to do the fund-raising as well as the organizational part.
The Mt Olivet Cemetery in Florida Twp went through a re-organization during the past 10 years, and we provided copies of the paperwork we sent to various state and federal agencies, copies of our by-laws, etc. We also shared how we have contacted descendants to ask for financial help.
It's what every abandoned cemetery needs, and what few get. Hixon was fortunately not owned by a landowner and has immediate access from the county road, so it's a good candidate for restoration. Add to that a descendant with good organization skills and the ability to get things done.........a recipe for success.

Is that Hixon Cemetery? There's another good story about a group of descendants and local people reclaiming an abandoned cemetery, forming an association.

Thanks Lee for pulling me out of the woodwork--I tend
to just skim and delete the bickering emails and
ignore the list until the good stuff comes up.
Yes, the newly formed Hixon Cemetery Association is
sponsoring a restoration workshop on June 7th at the
Hixon Cemetery and the Parke County Learning Center in
Rockville. When I was contacted by Mike Lewman last
year and we set a date I did not realize how close it
was going to be to the IHS/DNR workshop. Hopefully I
did not step on any toes. I hear that their workshop
is booked up so this one may be a good alternative if
you are in the area.
As you may know I am a middle school teacher and
organize restoration trips with my students and other
community groups. I will be taking that experience to
show basic cleaning and resetting techniques, as well
as a short classroom portion. If you are interested or
would like more information, either contact me or Mike
Lewman (mblewman(a)yahoo.com).
I will also respond to the previous email: I just
became a member of the AGS and will be attending their
conference in June. I was overjoyed to receive a
Lilly Teacher Creativity Grant that will allow me to
study gravestone carving. For three weeks in June I
will be able to travel through New England studying
historic cemeteries, visiting Karin Sprague's workshop
(the traditional gravestone carver shown on CBS Sunday
Morning) and attending the AGS Conference. When I
return I will be able to learn to carve limestone in
Bedford and restore a small cemetery near my home. If
anyone has some good suggestions for places to visit
in MA, ME, NH, VT or upper NY please email me off the
list (jlfelix24(a)yahoo.com).
And let's start talking about our current or future
spring/summer projects!
As for me, last weekend I took a group of 6th grade
girl scouts out in the freezing rain (not kidding) to
restore Hyten Cemetery, a small family plot near
Danville. On Friday I took a group of middle school
students to clean stones at Stilesville Cemetery on
their 1/2 day Activity Day. My "Cemetery Clean-Up"
activity has been the most popular both times I've
done it. Just goes to show that we're not nuts--this
really IS fun!!
On May 13th and 14th I'm really going to be nuts. I'm
taking the entire 8th grade in four shifts to restore
parts of Walnut Chapel Cemetery in Putnam County. The
season sure is getting busy!
You can check out these and other projects on my
INPCRP Hendricks County site.
How about everyone else? Projects?

I have been a member since 1994 and was on the Board of Trustees for six
years. I used to attend the annual conferences every year, but not for the last
three because it got a little outside my budget. I think it's a great
organization and it's members have a great deal of expertise, however, it is becoming
a bit "too" academic in some respects.

Hello good people,
If we may move on from this, and put aside egos and jerks, we have all
learned something very cool this weekend. In the South West, prickly
plants were put on graves to help clense the soul, and set it free. (An
Indiana and Aztec belief) In the Southern former slave states, prickly
plants were planted by pioneer slaves to keep spirits IN their graves,
so they didn't move around. This makes perfect scence as superstition
runs deep in the Virginias
Carolinals & Georgia, ans Louisiana areas. I find our history
facinating. Here were are, all people, all doing the same thing, for
very, very different reasons. One ritual started here, from out American
Indians. One started across the world. That is what makes America
wonderful. We are a great melting pot of great cultures and histories.
Ireally hope the next questioner is not made to feel stupid. You all
seem so intelligent, with a world of info to share that only a few
people in this world know. I am proud to be a part of your group and its
noble cause. Please do not take my email as a slame on anyone. Keep up
the good work.

Can you really be serious that the series of infantile, insulting rants
(and emails cheering on same) we endured over the weekend constitute
valid list traffic related to preserving historic cemeteries?
I'll keep quiet from here on out, but as things stand I'd have to say
this list is more about entertainment than enlightenment. Entertainment
of a lowbrow, poke-your-eyes-out-with-a-stick sort that I am really
shocked to see coming from people dedicated to preservation.
Does anyone know whether there are other lists out there that actually
treat the subject seriously?

That this rant did make us rise up and take notice. Nice to see so many posts, it's been a little slow. Today was a BEAUTIFUL day to be out in cemeteries -- we were in two rural ones this afternoon.
Dogwoods, redbuds, jonquils, and bluebells are in bloom. The sky was very blue, the temperature about 72 and a light breeze. Time for all to take a deep breath and send some cemetery news to the group. : )

WELL, GANG. HERE WE GO AGAIN. I HATE TO SEE OUR GOOD
COMMARARIE WITH EVERYONE GO DOWN THE DRAIN. WE WHO
HAVE BEEN ON THIS LIST FOR 6-7 YEARS OR MORE KNOW HOW
HARD SOME OF THE LIST'S PEOPLE WORK TO KEEP THE CEMETERIES UP
AND TRY TO GET LEGISLATURE PASSED IN ORDER TO KEEP THEM IN
GOOD ORDER. I WOULD JUST TAKE THOSE TYPE OF MESSAGES AS A

Ernie and all others, I'm sorry
I apologize for getting off point by forwarding an E-mail that disrupted
the List. That was never my Intention. I did not know who it was from and I did
not like his choice of words. I don't know if it is possible for someone
else to have written it, and used his E-Mail address for whatever reason. If so,
they could cause him some grief. Never the less, let's stay on point as some
have suggested, I will not become involved again.
I did not do it to get even with anyone, I just got upset at his
attacking me and apparently the list for no apparent reason. If you read
this, Please Delete it and DO NOT RESPOND. The issue is dead and buried.
For some reason his copy was returned ???

I for one am glad that Jack brought that note to the list. I do admit, his
reply could of been better. A few things I would like to note though. I
doubt very seriously that Chad is on this list. I'm betting that he ran

Lee, thanks and please keep us in the loop on your encounter with this Evans person. I'm sure a few of us are interested even if others are not. Perhaps he can educate us on his viewpoint in a more articulate and civil manner if he is on his meds. BTW, to keep on topic, where I grew up on the gulf coast of Florida, our variety of prickly pear was virulent and had huge yellow carnation-like flowers. (Florida is just a sandbar after all).
