Hello All,
I am working on a presentation on "Cemetery Art and Symbolism" and I
have found one that has me somewhat puzzled as I cannot find it
mentioned in any of the references on Gravestone Art. It is a
carving of a Dove, laying against a small tree stump with it's head
down as if dead, and one wing propped up on the stump.
There are several interpretations for birds and doves - peace;
innocence; purity; the Holy Spirit - And flying doves -
resurrection; eternal Life; the flight of the soul back to God.
But I can find no reference of a dove that appears to be dead or
weeping, with one wing up on the small tree stump. The stump
suggests a possible connection to the Modern Woodmen of America
fraternal organization, but small stumps also symbolize premature
death, and these are all on children's graves.
Has anyone else seen these, or know anything about it's symbolism?
Ernie
Morning everyone. Sure is cold AGAIN, growl, growl!
Anyway, I wanted to share this with everyone. Anyone researching their county should use this
to look for possible old books that are now online with Google. Two really nice features are that
you can -word search- for your county or download the whole book for later research right at home.
These are in Adobe Reader or- pdf format.
First you do need more than dial up to get these books downloaded. Or go find a friend with cable.
Go to google.com, <http://www.google.com/> then look at the top menu right over the search box,
At the right end you will see the word more>> click that open and select books.
Then be sure to click on *full view books. These can be downloaded to your
computer to view later. I have found a lot to look at for Tippecanoe County, from
early histories, biographies, early churches , gazetteer's, maps and such.
It's worth a try if your looking for clues to place things 160 years ago.
Just play around with it, I think you will find it worth the time.
Another tip before you get to wild. :-) Once you have selected a book to view,
you can then word search it from the bottom right search box on Google.
It's not worth downloading everything you find with your county mentioned.
Enjoy,
