Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Hello,
The article was in the Wednesday, May 28 edition, and can be found in the
archives here:
http://www.pdclarion.com/articles/2003/05/28/export10738.txt
I am still working on this, I have some people checking up-state to see if
things were/are done properly. I had to take off a week & go to WVa. for
a death in the family and am running behind on everything. And with all
the rain that we have had, the cemeteries that I mow were beginning to look
like jungles. I hope to get caught up this week.
I'll keep you posted on any news on the cemetery situation.

"Show me your cemeteries, and I will tell you what kind of people you
have."
Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790)
I talked to Neil Jeffries at Estates of Serenity, and told him of your offer to come and help with the repairs. He said to thank everyone, but they have about 3/4 of the stones reset and plan to have the rest done by Friday. The damage at the mausoleum will require replacement of columns as they were shattered. Only 2 or 3 of the 70 stones were broken, the others were toppled. He has 1 of the broken obelisks to repair yet, he was waiting for Akem to repair it.
If you would still like to come and work at the cemetery on a section he is willing to let us do that, generate some positive publicity (for the cemetery and INPCRP) and hopefully some money for the trust fund, which he says if almost nonexistent. If you still want to come, let me know, I will make arrangements with Neil and any other that need to be made. The cemetery is very old, started as a Quaker cemetery about 1840 or so, is still active, and has over 30,000 burials. There were many years of neglect and much work that needs to be done.
Neil really appreciated the offer, and said "God Bless" all of you.

I will call Neil Jeffries at Estates of Serenity and give him this offer. I
don't know if he will accept it or not, he was concerned with liability when
Mark and I spoke to him a couple of months ago about resetting a military
stone. I will post his reply this morning, as soon as I talk to him,
probably after 9 am.

Walt,
Count me in.....However, I tried to volunteer to work in Estates of Serenity at Marion
to set a military stone and they wouldnt agree to that because of liability issues. They
are "granite minded" and think concrete is the best friend to restoration of stones.
Count me in to bring some supplies too.
If they agree to let everyone work then I will be there.

"Show me your cemeteries, and I will tell you what kind of people you have."
Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790)
Here is a problem that I have. I have many relatives and ancestors in the
Estates of Serenity Cemetery, Marion. There is no one in the Cemetery, per
se, to advise me when things such as this occur. I have to read it in the
paper. If it were not for this group and the Marion Library Genealogy Group
I would never have heard any of this. I have no idea if any of my
relatives and ancestors graves were disturbed or not, and even if they were
who would fix them, who is responsible for that. I am assuming the current
[unknown] owner. Who do I even ask. The gravestones [and most of my family]
have all been there for many, many years, as reported by the
Chronicle-Tribune. [Mine were not in the mausoleum thankfully] $65,000 is
still a lot of damage and apparently there was a lot still being fixed up by
someone [the current owner ? "an undisclosed non-profit organization "from
the last time for another $2,000. Does anyone know who that is. Lately I
have heard that many of the stones are already is disrepair. Sinking, weeds,
and so forth.. nothing illegal so nothing can be done there apparently. The
article also said " that the Marion police were investigating and that they
have increased patrols..." Another question I have is ...Did the police ever
follow through with the cannon that were sold on eBay from that same
cemetery. ? What is going on in that part of town and who are those vandals
anyway. Can't anything be done. I am outraged. Someone must know who did
that amount of devastation... why in the world would anyone do something
such as that anyway. Surely this is more than a childish prank. Tell me
it's not just a bunch of kids. I will be really upset because that would
further suggest that appropriate security is, at the very least, not in
place.
Just my perspective.
Susanna

"Himsel checks cemeteries for possible lost stones, researches records for
anyone buried in an unmarked grave, repairs damaged stones, clears debris
and erects a new granite marker bearing the name of the cemetery, a brief
history and the names of those known to be buried in the cemetery. "
And this is a gross understatement! I don't believe it would be possible to
list all the things that he has accomplished.
Nice goin' Junie.

Long-time INPCRP member Delbert Himsel of DuBois Co., IN is the focus of a
column by Byron Crawford in the Louisville Courier-Journal on Sunday,
6/15/2003. You can see the article at:
http://www.courier-journal.com/cjextra/columns/crawford/crawford.html
The web version of the column does not include an excellent photo of Delbert
kneeling at what I'm sure is a whetstone marker, the cemetery itself
overlooking the Ohio River.
I realize the URL for the INPCRP website is badly jumbled in the story.
I've already written to Ric Manning at the C-J asking him to correct it on
the website.
