Dear Angela:
Ryan had a GREAT idea there. See if you can find Messrs. Apple, Kleiman or
Heiden's ancestors' graves in Hancock County and get pictures of them. If you
can find a great-great-grandmother of one of them is a neglected pioneer
family cemetery and get that blown up, you will certainly grab their
attention.

If any of you who are County Cemetery Commissioners get this message on
Thursday evening, I hope you'll drop a line to:
Scott Miley scott.miley(a)indystar.com
an Indianapolis Star reporter who contacted me this evening asking about
County Cemetery Commissions in Indiana.
He's doing a story on Angela Tielking's efforts in Hancock County.
I gave Scott my list of County Cemetery Commissions and he was surprised there
were so many.
He asked me a number of questions about how CCCs and Township Trustees work
together in other counties and, if you can offer any information on this, send
Scott an e-mail this evening or you can try to reach him by phone at
317-444-6178.
I suspect Scott is working on a deadline for publication in the Friday morning
paper so time is of the essence.
Lois
Angela,
Just a comment from a "radical, activity and preservationist" in California.
Why don't you see if the local paper will run the blow up with the photo
tag: "Commissioner so-and so's Great-Grandmother's grave is located in an
abandoned cemetery that has become overgrown and neglected. Commissioner
so-and so recently refused to consider the need for a county cemetery
commission...."

Dear Group:
I need your help. I spoke with the Hancock County Commissioners on Monday about establishing a cemetery commission board for the county. I handed them a 51 page "report/proposal" regarding the care the cemeteries receive. I RANDOMLY picked two cemeteries from each of the nine townships in the county from a cemetery book. Most were in poor shape. Some were in horrible shape. And some were in pretty good shape. Since the commissioners would not go out to the cemeteries themselves, I brought the cemeteries to them by putting color copies of my photos in my report. I also included all of the Hall of Shame cemeteries in Hancock Co.
The commissioners seemed disinterested. One commissioner said he has received zero calls on the issue (the care of the county's cemeteries has been in the news alot the last several months). If any one would be interested in writing or calling about the importance on the care of our cemeteries (especially pioneer cemeteries), I have the contact info below. Now is the time to speak!
I will be mailing Lois the most recent articles in the next day or so if anyone wants to read what is going on before calling or writing. It's the same old stuff we all are dealing with.
County commissioners:
Mr. Armin Apple (317) 462-1105
Mr. Brian Kleiman (317) 462-1105
Mr. Jack Heiden (317) 462-1105 Note: Jack is on our side, but unfortunately was on vacation when I gave my proposal on Monday.

Thanks Art,
If they have held this long ( early Last fall ?) They might stay. Speaking
of weed eating, I'm going to have to work on St Pete. The grass they planted
there in 1965 is big wide blades and grows about 3 inches a week. Yes it does
to. When you cleaned Little Flock did you use a Big 2 wheel weed Whacker with
1/4 inch line ??. And I have 1 BIG problem withh BIG BLACK ants. They want to
take over. After they go in this winter I'm going to have a going away party
for them. but they don't need to bring party favors.
Also, Art I was down on Black Chapel rd today and still cant find the
Hoke cemetery. I made a map from Mapquest and it shows all the roads around,
but I dont have an address or site to enter to get a Red Star in the right
place. I wanted to see what it looks like. And yes, that is Seven Springs
Lake, I drove back Black Chapel until I saw the Dam on the right. Big ain't
it. As far as cleaning the Hoke, Were you going to wait until at least Aug.
1st untill the Ticks are gone. Let me know. I plan on Helping if you can use
me. Right now I'm sitting here trying to figure out my Digital Camera. Darn
Grandkids aren't supposed to give Grandfathers, Fathers day gifts anyhow. !!

UEB sent us a message last night about a Forum (opinion) story written by
Richard Shirey, the Center Township Trustee, calling for restoration of
pioneer cemeteries. See
http://www.thestarpress.com/Opinion/01/jun/0617Forummainarticleedop.html
for the full article.
This morning, UEB provided us with Mr. Shirey's e-mail address --
trustee(a)CenterTownshipTrustee.com
UEB has sent to me the URL for the Center Township Trustee's website:
http://www.CenterTownshipTrustee.com
which features a section on his Township's cemeteries:
http://www.centertownshiptrustee.com/cemetery.htm
I hope every one of you will take a few minutes to read the Star Press article
by Mr. Shirey and take a look at his website. Then, sit down and send an
e-mail to Mr. Shirey congratulating him on his achievements in the field of
cemetery restoration, invite him to visit the INPCRP website at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp and, finally, invite him to attend our final
cemetery restoration workshop in Madison on 10/6/2001.

I have sent the following email to the Delaware County, IN Center township trustee. His emaill is trustee(a)centertownshiptrustee.com
Let him know how we feel about his efforts on behalf of the pioneer cemeteries. Maybe it will make the other trusttes jealous and get them off their egos and do their jobs like Mr. Shirley.
Dear Mr. Shirley,
I would like to commend you and personally thank you for your efforts on bringing dignity and respect back to the Center township Trustee's office and especially on the restoration of the cemeteries of our pioneers. This is a project that a small group of us have been working on state wide as the "Indiana Pioneer Cemetery Restoration Project" (INPCRP) INPCRP-L(a)rootsweb.com
for the last several years. If I had one wish for a politician, it would be, that all township trustees have the same feelings that you have for our pioneer cemeteries. You Sir, are one of a very few.
Again, Thank You!!!!

Howdy to all,
I am the new kid on the block. As of last week I have become the
Howard Co. Coordinator of INPCRP. I have yet to do much. I have managed to
get around and see a portion of the cemeteries in Howard Co. Me and My
family took all day Saturday to go find look at and take pics of
cemeteries. I still have many more to look at. Now I am going to try and
get a web site up this week, something that I know little about. It is
amazing how many cemeteries are out there that need TLC. I did run into a
few people along the way that were kind and willing to share what they know
about the cemetery. I even got one who said that they would help with
restoring at least one cemetery (better than none). Thanks to Debra Beheler
who sent my email address to and as a result is sending a donation to help
get things started. So now I am trying to get things going.

Well, we just rolled back in to Jeffersonville a little while ago from our
visit to LaPorte.
Our THANKS to Holly Jenks in LaPorte Co., her amazing team of volunteers and
workers and to the Indiana Historical Society, Katherine Dill and John Harris
(both from the IHS) for their incredible work in putting this workshop
together!
I haven't heard a final head-count on attendees, but suspect there were about
50 people all told.
Jeannie Regan-Dinius from the DNR DHPA was there to talk about the cemetery
registry project that was begun earlier this year. As always, there was a
great deal of interest in that program.
One of the LaPorte Co. Commissioners and a member of the LaPorte Co. Veterans
Grave Registry spoke as well.
Holly gave an impressive overview of what has been accomplished and is going
on today in LaPorte County.
John Walters ("Walt") did his usual terrific job of making stone repairs look
easy. I talked to several people at the workshop who now feel empowered to go
out there and try to do simple repairs on their own.
BTW, John has started making up small containers of pre-mixed slot mix and
stack mix for folks who don't want to hassle with huge bags of cement, lime
and sand to do a couple of stone repairs.
Also, John is going to talk to the folks at Hilgarten (the makers of Mastico
epoxy) about the possibility of them packaging the epoxy and hardener in
smaller quantities for folks that don't want to buy $50 worth of epoxy and
hardener just so they can fix 2 or 3 stones.
The weather was great, the fellowship was terrific, the program was superb and
it was a GREAT workshop. THANKS to everybody who had a hand in making it
happen.
Don't forget the next workshop (and last one of the year) will be Saturday,
October 6, in MADISON, Indiana. Rep. Markt Lytle has been confirmed as a
speaker at that workshop. Those of you who have been around for a while know
that Rep. Lytle is the Chairman of the General Assembly's House Agriculture,
Natural Resources and Rural Development Committee. This is the Committee to
which most any bills affecting pioneer cemeteries are referred and this is a
PERFECT opportunity to talk one-on-one with Rep. Lytle about some of our
concerns.
There is a LOT of interest from our counterparts over in Kentucky in attending
the Madison workshop and I think there will be an excellent attendance at that
one too, so mark your calendars and make your reservations soon with the IHS.
Hope to see you all soon.
Lois
Thanks, UEB! I've added this one to the In the News page as well.

Well, if we're all going to come to the plate together....I thought it was
me since I seem to offend so many people here in California, I thought I'd
just lost all my manners (I lost my marbles a long time ago...)
I for one do not intend my comments to be taken personally. Cemeteries is

Jack,
I haven't seen where you "might" of offended anyone but in my opinion
anyone that reaches the age of 70, and stays as active as you do, has every
right to say what you want. My feeling is this. I'm only a young 45. You
on the other hand have probably forgotten more then I already know. Your
probably were a "depression baby" and had childhood thet we young ones
couldn't imagine. Your wisdom is far greater then most of us young ones and
I look forward to your comments, weather good or bad. If you offend me,
that's my problem, not yours, as you are, like the rest of us, entitled to
your opinions. That's just my two cents worth
