Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I am still incredulous that a Township Trustee "in office for decades" could
have only "recently" learned that he was responsible for maintaining certain
neglected cemeteries within his Township.
I know we have at least one Township Trustee on this list. How is this
possible?
What sort of education/training do the Township Trustees normally receive?
How could a person be in this office "for decades" and not know about this
statutory responsibility?
Does anybody on the list know this Township Trustee?

Jim and all,
It's a hoax. Search "virus hoax" and select the Symantic website that
discusses specific hoaxes. Go to the name of this hoax and note that the
file SULFNBK.EXE is one normally found on your computer, something about
converting long files.
So you haven't sent us all a virus, thankfully. If you have deleted the
file the Symantec folks advise how to go about replacing it.

Hello all,
I told you all about people being in the cemetery doing work and I expressed
my concern. Then told you all of the For Sale sign (Handled by Lake Co.
Surplus Properties, you can buy some graves here for $600 for a 49ft by 53 ft
section) on a section that has burials in it. I tried to make it clear that I
hadnt the foggiest idea what to do as this all new to me. Guess I had hoped
for someone in your group to somehow save this cemetery... I did get good
advice, but still I dont know how to act on things like this, that's why I
was just trying to get the word out to people that I thought did.
And, it wasnt even "City" employees doing it. The Trustee cared so much that
he hired a small tree service to do the work, Larry's Tree Service out of
Hammond Indiana, mainly young guys about 19-24 years old. When I went looking
around the cemetery I told them of the settlers buried there and pointed out
the many stones of children and babies buried there hoping that the boys
would use a little more care. Guess it didnt help.

Gary's historic Waldheim Cemetery dates back to 1800's
By Maureen Hegarty Times Correspondent
Gary- When the first settlers arrived in the Tolleston area of Gary they
created a small cemetery for their loved ones graves.
Over the years, those who cared for the cemetery at 20th and Grant streets
dwindled, and it was finally abandoned.
Until earlier this week, the historic Waldheim cemetery appeared to be
nothing more than an overgrown lot with large weeds and trees covering the
tombstones.
That is all in the process of changing as Calumet Township workers are using
wood chippers, backhoes and saws to clear the land and restore the cemetery.
"They have started the cleanup and will be setting the tombstones back in
shape," said Wanda Joshua of the Calumet Townships trustee's office. "We're
involved with the cleanup because the township is responsible for taking care
of cemeteries."
The two-block cemetery was first started sometime in the 1800s when people
started to settle in the area just west of Grant Street.
"It was originally owned by a group of people in Tolleston. I think they were
just the first settlers there," Joshua said. "Once we get it cleaned up,
there could be some real old tombstones there." (My note: Ms Joshua doesnt
seem to have researched anything on this cemetery she's handling.)
She said if the funds are available, the township will continue to maintain
the cemetery.
Township Trustee Dozier T Allen started to look into cleaning up the cemetery
after an article in The Times last summer described the poor conditions of
the property.
"After looking into it, he just determined there was nobody to take care of
it now," Joshua said. (My Note: Apparently they didnt check the land records)
"It used to be maintained by a private group of people, but they just got too
old or they died and it was abandoned."
Joshua said she did not know how long the cleanup would take.
Jack,
Your prejudice is showing. You're right, but not all city/county/state
workers are slugs. Only ??? of them...
Sue

How is one to judge whether or not a cemetery is abandoned? Just because
it is not cared for by way of mowing and cleaning does not mean that people
aren't visiting it, and if it is being visited or people know of it but are
unable to visit it regularly (due to geographical distance or physical
limitations) it is, in my mind, not abandoned. People may visit a cemetery
and nobody ever knows they were there. They may go early in the morning,
the cemetery may be isolated so there is no one to record the comings and
goings of visitors, they may only go to it every 10 years when there is a
family reunion that brings them to the area, they may not have been to the
cemetery for 50 years but return to look for it as they are growing
old. If the assumption is made that a cemetery is "abandoned" then this
makes its status as a valuable asset vulnerable. If it is abandoned, then
we can assume nobody cares about it, and the option to do away with it or
remove items from it is more easily rationalized. I am sure that many
so-called abandoned cemeteries are cared for by many people in many ways
even though there are no signs of that care at the cemetery itself. The
unfortunate reality is that cemeteries' most loyal potential care givers
are the elderly who often have the least physical and financial resources
to help out with making a cemetery look other than "abandoned". If the
lack of physical care is what determines that a cemetery is "abandoned"
then we have made the leap from lack of maintenance to total disinterest by
living persons and I don't believe we can equate the two. Perhaps a better
term to describe what we are trying to describe is "Unmaintained
Cemetery". This accurately states what we want it to state, that the
cemetery is unmaintained (that may be an invented word, by the way!), but
it leaves the possibility that the cemetery is not abandoned by the living,
that people know of its existence and care about it but for whatever
reasons they are unable to physically maintain it to project an image that
an actively maintained cemetery would have.
Continuing to open the can of worms,
Ned Coleman
This is the jist of the article which appeared in The Herald Bulletin,
Tuesday, May 29, 2001, Page A-2, Column 5 (Anderson, Indiana).
Cemetery Restoration Work Causes Damage, GARY (AP) --
It was reported that grave sites were damaged and tombstones were
overturned due to restoration work at two of northern Indiana's oldest
cemeteries and that this has lead to an investigation by state officials.
The restoration was being directed by the Calumet Township Trustee, Dozier
T. Allen. He reportedly admitted that reasonable precautions had not been
taken with the work.
The article quotes Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation
officer Tim Janowski, while surveying the Gary cemeteries, as having
remarked "It's obvious there were graves here" and "And its obvious there
has been some excavation work done here"
It is stated in the article, "Tire tracks from heavy machinery are evident
throughout the Tolleston and Forest Hill cemeteries, first used by
settlers of the region in the late 1800s. Trees are chipped, headstones
have been submerged in freshly plowed soil and some grave sites are left
undistinguished after crews cut through the cemeteries over the last
month."
Alice and Thelma Ewen, Gary residents whose grandfather deeded the land to
the town of Telleston in 1886, were the ones who were attracted to the
damage. They had visited the family graves there (which were
undisturbed), and Alice noted "It's terrible what they've done here. It's
like they did it thinking there wouldn't be anybody around anymore who
would care."
Alice admitted she could not remember the names of the families buried on
Tolleston Cemetery's southern end, but she remebered graves being there.
Reportedly, what exists now is a deep, sloping embankment with grass seed
and occasional trees. Alice said "I'm sure there were graves over there,
Praise the Lord they didn't do it to them all."
The Trustee pointed out that there were some graves marked only by wooden
crosses laid there generations ago and those would not be replaced;
however, he indicated that great care was being taken to "salvage granite
headstones they do find".
According to the article, the Trustee further stated, "You have to
understand, this was a first-time experience for our office. We thought
we were using reasonable precaution, but we now know we have to proceed
with a different approach. Some areas may have been disturbed, but now
we've got a cemetery plot so we can do a better job of identifying sites."
END.
Also, see the link someone else submitted for the story that ran in the
area of the cemetery. I believe this was a contracted job, but I don't
recall.
Sandy.

Jack, from past experiences I have learned that people often innocently
confuse the term "abandon" and/or "Forsaken" with Isolated.
There have been times when the roadway into an ancient cemetery was
ploughed under, or in many other ways destroyed, then a sign posted
reading "NO TRESPASSING" ... Such a cemetery is then "isolated" and may
in no way be abandoned. Oftentimes, mischief and greedy individuals are
anxious to use the words abandoned, forgotten and forsaken to describe a
cemetery when they are caught in the process of destroying it or after they
have had it destroyed.... It is their excuse for an inexcusable action on
behalf of ill doers.
The unfortunate thing about an "Isolated" cemetery is unscrupulous property
owners, dastardly land developers and vandals have all the time in the world
to destroy all surface evidence of a burial ground.
As long as there are people willing and able to annually visit and / or care
for a cemetery as most of you wonderful do, then those grounds are not
abandoned
by any means. But, if we are denied access into a cemetery, or the road
is destroyed making it hazardous to enter a burial ground, or to even
difficult to get permission to enter a graveyard for any worthy reason,
then by all means it is "Isolated." Thank you for allowing me to share my
point of view.
Respectfully, Dave Cheesman

How about "endangered cemeteries"?
endanger; endangered; endangering. 1. to put in hazard; to bring into
danger or peril; to expose to loss or injury; as, we dread anything
that endangers our life, our peace, or our happiness. [Or our
cemeteries. My words. SMC] [Webster's New Universal Unabridged

For those interested in my statement (which I have not seen yet, so I am not
sure how far it was taken out of context) I stated that people should do
research about the area and people buried in the cemetery before they start
working on it; don't assume you know how the cemetery should looked. I
referenced Lynette Strangstads article "Preservation Information" published
by the National Trust of Historic Preservation. There is nothing wrong with
research and thought before we go in and landscape a cemetery.

In my nearly 70 years I suppose I have not been very well informed. If
there are cultures that believe a cemetery, or Burial site should not be
cleaned, why don't they just clear a spot big enough to do the Burial, why
have a large area cleared and then at a later date say "Well it's time to
stop cleaning the cemetery and let it go back to it's natural state. Come to
think about it why did we buy those stones anyhow, we are just going to let
the area grow up now and no one will see them.". At what point do you stop
cleaning, 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, 50 years, a Hundred, When ? And where
in
America is a cemetery with Tombstones in it, is the Culture that believes
this. In my immediate, and Ancestor family I have Hispanic, Indian, Black,
Jewish, Mormon, Amish, and Asian, and some other Cultures and none of them
ever stated this to me. They have all applauded what I have, and am doing. I
have heard this "Culture" mentioned lately, but I have not talked to anyone
with Black and White Factual Information. I would be glad to, at my own
expense, talk to anyone with proof. Not proof by 1 or 2 radicals, but a
representative factual statement of a cultural background that believes in
letting a cemetery revert to it's original state. And as I said, at what
point does this begin, and why then, why not earlier, or later. I don't want
an individuals beliefs, I want FACTS. So far all I have heard is "Certain
Cultures" are these "Cultures in the United States"? I do not wish to be
confrontational, but lets present something that we can all use as
Guidelines. I certainly don't want to clean a cemetery against the beliefs
of
those buried there. But so far I don't know who they are. I am sure no one
in
Indiana want's to clean a cemetery against the wishes of a particular
"Culture", But PLEASE give me facts, let me know who they are, make it
public
knowledge for all of us on the INPCRP List and anyone else interested in
saving our History.
If I have offended anyone, I apologize, I just felt this should not be
treated lightly, it is something that needs to be brought out Immediately
before someone, good intentioned, offends someone by going out and cleaning
a
cemetery against their Cultural wishes. Thank's for standing
in front of my Soap Box.

Hey!
Out of 75 cemeteries, I have 5 more to visit in Vanderburgh County
to complete my journey to each cemetery. There are another
seven that are listed but I could not find them, I'll need to look
a little more carefully.
Most of the cemeteries are in great shape. I've found three or four
that are heavily overgrown and another one that needs some attention.
I was told about three other "unknown" family burial plots while I was out
cemetery hunting.
I've only seen one snake, a baby at that.
Across Indiana was on this past Sunday and they didn't have anything
about cemeteries. The cemetery episode must have been shown the
Sunday before that one.
See ya July 13th in Indy.
