Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Does anyone have an internet address where I can find the text for public
law 46 (or is it 100) that requires notification of the DNR prior to
digging near a cemetary?

This is very interesting. The cemetery preservationist in me wants to see
that
cemetery mowed, but the environmentalist in me loves the idea that these
old
cemeteries are preserving the native plants that the pioneers were familiar
with.
When people ask us how to take care of old cemeteries we do encourage them
to not
overmow - once or twice a year is OK with us, since mowers can cause so
much
damage. And the key to the question is found in the last part of the
article ...
occasional mowing doesn't, apparently, cause great harm to the native
plants. All
in all, I like the idea of using old cemeteries to preserve native plants.

Hello all,
In 1997, with the help of a friend, Lisa Miller, I started the Washington
State Cemetery Association. In 1998 we incorporated as a non-profit
corporation. Our charter is to protect old and abandoned cemeteries in the
state and to educate the public. At that time Pam Buckingham joined us.
Since 1998, I have done most of the work involved while Lisa and Pam have
helped as much as they can with two and three children, full time jobs,
school, and husbands. I have my own business and all my children are
adults and so I could devote more time than the others. But the job is
growing by leaps and bounds as the need here grows. I've been handling the
legal aspects, the newsletter, working as consultant to various entities,
answering questions, developing the web site/book, developing the files on
cemeteries with legal information, and everything else. My own business
and goals have been put aside for about three years now as I devote
probably an average of 40 hours per week to the association and cemeteries.
Because of the tremendous amount of work involved, I am getting burnt out
and the organization will be coming to a standstill and probably dissolving
unless help is received. Here is a list of potential positions.
Volunteer coordinator - desperately need someone to locate individuals to
fulfill many functions and to work with them to get the jobs done.
Book editor/compiler.
Contributing appropriate information from around the state to the web site
(providing information from around the state to the web design team for
finalizing and uploading).
Newsletter - 4x per year.
The laws - learn the laws and become a cemetery expert so there is more
than one in the state.
Workshops/seminars - learn how to properly restore cemeteries so you can
provide education around the state.
Education - work with schools to develop lesson plans so children can be
taught about cemeteries at a young-enough age.
I can no longer do this job alone. This is a cry for help from any person
or group who can donate long-term help in any of the above areas. I truly
feel that I've grown the business and it's now ready for new owners--others
to take a personal interest in the business of the association and carry it
forward to a new level. I will happily stay on the board and give
direction and guidance for as long as others think I need to.
Please don't let this wonderful organization disappear! If you are
interested, please contact me at (360) 871-5694.

It's difficult to believe someone could walk into a neglected and overgrown
cemetery even to seek flora and fauna and not see the bigger picture.
Does make one wonder...

Here's a link to my page for the removal of unknown graves
from the hospital in Evansville, Vand. Co., Indiana
65 graves were relocated.
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/3211/statehospital.html
There are plans to build a new hospital on the current property
and reuse/sell the current building for another use.
Its hard to say whether or not they will discover other unmarked
burial sites.

This list is for discussion of topics related to the Indiana Pioneer
Cemeteries Restoration Project only.
I know there was some concern in Washington about this subject. If there
is anyone who would like to take on the endeavor here in our state, let me
know and I'll provide assistance and web space and whatever else I can.

NOTE FROM LOIS: August 20th is a Sunday. I suggest you confirm the date if
you are planning on attending!
I just got word from our friend, Holly Jenks of LaPorte <hollyjen(a)csinet.net>,
that her 22-year-old son is on life support tonight because a neighbor shot
him in the head and then killed himself because her son was tinkering in the
garage making noise.
She advises, "We are holding in but he won't make it anyway. Keep us in your
prayers."
Please remember Holly as she faces a parent's worst nightmare. If you write
to Holly, I don't imagine she'll have time to respond, but I know she and her
family would appreciate your prayers.

For those of you interested in cemetery restoration, here is an opportunity
to develop your skills and help preserve history. Saturday August 19, we
will be meeting from at Sprinkle cemetery located at 1175 S 800 E; Jackson
Twp., Cass County, Indiana - about 1 1/2 miles north and 1 1/2 miles west of
Galveston.
We plan to work from 8 a.m. - ?. Come dressed to work, bring shovels,
bring a friend, and bring some energy. If you are hesitant to work on the
gravestones, there is also an small iron fence that needs to be painted. I
have the paint and brush for that and other supplies for cleaning and
repair, so bring yourself and a friend.

Thank you for posting the news story on the Boggstown Cemetery.
Does anyone know the names on the vandalized headstones? My
great-grandparents are buried there and if theirs was disturbed I want to
make certain that it is reset. (Not that I don't care about the others :)
but I feel it is important that a living relative take care of their own
family's graves if at all possible.) The names are Kenneth Egbert (Bert)
Hardy and Flora Belle Hardy.
Thank you.

I want to urge everyone on this listing to run your virus protection software this week. I just found one on my new PC and it came from an email message from a friend earlier this week. Since I mailed a message to the listing since I received that email, I may have sent out the virus to you as well. I hope no one has any problems, but you should check into it and make sure!
Sorry.

PapawB(a)aol.com asked for more information on "generally accepted cemetery
conservation and restoration techniques".
I believe that would include the GENERAL information set forth in the INPCRP
Step-by-Step Cemetery Restoration Guidelines at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp/pcrpstepbystep.html
(admonitions against trespassing, working with local authorities, links to
additional information from the real "experts", etc.)
If anyone has any suggestions for additions to that page, I hope you'll drop
me a line.
The Association for Gravestone Studies provides a wide variety of restoration
resources, including "A Graveyard Preservation Primer" by Lynette Strangstad.
(See http://www.gravestonestudies.org/ )
Another reliable resource is the book, "Landscapes of Memories: A Guide for
Conserving Historic Cemeteries", published by the Heritage Properties and
Museum Programs Unit of the Cultural Programs Branch, Province of Ontario.
(See http://www.gov.on.ca/MCZCR/english/culdiv/heritage/memories.htm )
The latter two are certainly not the ONLY experts or resources in this area,
but they are very widely recognized as leaders in the field. The AGS is
generally accepted to be the premier American authority in cemetery
restoration and stone repair and they make a multitude of materials available
to the public.
I hope this is sufficient to answer some of your questions.

The permission slip refers to generally accepted cemetery conservation and

organizations. Where can these techniques be found and who are the similar
organizations? Our volunteers are reluctant to sign such a form without
seeing the techniques in printed or written form.
