Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
There are some new features on the PCRP home page:
1) I have added a listing of Indiana Representatives
(Congressmen/Congresswomen). This list provides an E-mail link, the
house district, party affiliation, and county coverage for each
Representative. I am going to be asking each of you to put this page to
good use in the next message that I send through the list.
2) I will be adding a list similar to the one described above for
Indiana Senators.
3) There is a "Stumbling Blocks" page. This page talks about some of
the hurdles we have to cross to get the job of restoring and preserving
these cemeteries done. I am eager for more input to this page.
4) There will be a page simply called "Correspondence". The idea
behind this page is to publicly display all e-mail to/from our state and
local representatives and officials concerning aspects of this project.
For better or for worse, we want everyone to be able to see the level of
cooperation we may or may not be getting.
5) I have included a PCRP Orphans page. This is a listing of
cemeteries that are identified to the project but are in counties that
are not yet adopted. The page includes a simple e-mail form for posting
additions to this list.
As usual, I would like everyone to take a look at the additions and give
me your feedback.

Cemetery: (n) A marble orchard not to be taken for granite.
Hi everyone,
What follows is a letter co-authored by Lois Mauk and myself. It is an
invitation to join the PCRP mailing list. I would like each of you to
take a few minutes to think about other people who may share our
interest in Pioneer Cemeteries and forward a copy of this letter to each
one. Even people who don't live in Indiana can participate and share
the benefit of their experiences.
Thanks,
Scott Satterthwaite
____________________________
You and I have communicated in the past due to our mutual interest in
saving Pioneer Cemeteries in Indiana or elsewhere. I am writing today
to invite you to join the Indiana Pioneer Cemeteries Restoration Project
(INPCRP)E-mail Discussion List.
The Indiana Pioneer Cemeteries Restoration Project was formed a few
months ago to organize efforts throughout the state to restore and
preserve the hundreds of decaying cemeteries. This problem is not
unique to any county in Indiana nor to any state in the Union. We
believe the dialogue possible on the INPCRP e-mail group will be
uniquely valuable to restorationists both in Indiana and elsewhere and
that the exchange of information from both within and without the state
will be valuable to us all.
The INPCRP premise is simple. Each county is available for "adoption"
by a County Coordinator. The County Coordinator will in turn adopt out
each of the Pioneer Cemeteries in his/her county to a Project
Coordinator who will oversee the restoration and preservation efforts
for a particular cemetery. To read more about the project, browse to:
http://www.citznet.com/~ssattert/inpcrp/
To make the system work, however, requires that as many people as
possible be involved and we'd like you to join us.
Although all INPCRP County Coordinators are required to join the mailing
list to facilitate communicate between them and the State Coordinator,
the list is for anyone interested in the restoration or preservation of
Pioneer Cemeteries, whether here in Indiana or elsewhere, although sites
within Indiana will naturally be our focus.
We realize that the experiences and expertise of our friends outside the
state will be useful to our efforts here and expect it to be a learning
opportunity for everyone involved.
Topics on the INPCRP list range from headstone repair to cemetery law
and from issues with local landowners to fundraising efforts and
garnering media coverage for our efforts. Almost any topic dealing with
cemeteries is acceptable for discussion.
The only exception to this rule is that no genealogical queries
(excluding efforts to locate a specific cemetery) are permitted. Other
forums already exist to facilitate genealogical queries and they are not
germane to our efforts on the INPCRP list. Further, if anyone wishes to
report on the condition of a specific cemetery, such a posting would be
welcome.
Joining the INPCRP list on Rootsweb is very easy and best of all, it's
FREE. Simply address an e-mail to:
INPCRP-L-request(a)rootsweb.com
Leave the subject line blank and turn off or delete your signature
block. In the body of the e-mail, place the single word:
SUBSCRIBE
and nothing else. Send the e-mail and you will receive a Welcome
Message from Rootsweb and the INPCRP, usually within a few minutes.
Read and save the Welcome Message as it contains important information
about how the list operates. That's all there is to joining the INPCRP
mailing list.
To post a message, simply address your e-mail message to:
INPCRP-L(a)rootsweb.com.
Please forward a copy of this e-mail to anyone you know who may also
have an interest in saving Pioneer Cemeteries, in Indiana or elsewhere.

Good touch, Scott!
Well, I know this little nut up here is on hold. We got blasted with
snow and cold. Makes my branches shiver! Brrr...
As yet, I have several people that are willing to work on the project, I
will be getting all of us together so we can discuss all the things to
be done while winter begins to grab at our roots.
While I continue to try and shake off the cold snow, the project is
still underway...slowly but surely.

Hey Scott...Quick update on my project #1...Evrything is going
great...VERY cold yesterday with snow but we were out there with our boy
scout troop we located and have cleared all weeds from the cemetery. We
also uncovered several stones that had not been seen before that was
covered in debris. Now you can look at the cemetery and see the rows of
tombstones forming. We are getting very close to picking the stones up
and placing where they belong and or repairing. We've come along way
but we have a long way yet to go...
Hey Scott, I am going to the Whitewater Valley Genealogy Society meeting
here in Connersville Tuesday night. Do you want me to say something
about PCRP in hopes of getting a Fayette County Coordinator?

Remember to give us your project updates at monthly Roll-Call!
If you have an interest in going on the 11/29/97 bus tour of the TEN PIONEER
CEMETERIES inside the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant at Charlestown (Clark
Co., IN), please get in touch with me right away.
If you're not interested, just go ahead and hit the delete button. My
apologies for any duplicate postings.
The response to the sale of tickets for the Clark County Cemetery
Preservation Committee's tour has been tremendous! Though the "deadline"
for ticket purchases is November 15, and counting only the persons whose
checks I have physically received as of 11/12/97, the 47-passenger motor
coach is nearly full.
If we end up with only a few overflow persons, I can transport them in my
van. However, my phone hasn't stopped ringing for the past two weeks and I
think there are a lot of people who just haven't mailed their checks yet.
I have already confirmed that a second motor coach is available on 11/29/97,
if we can sell enough tickets to cover the overhead on the second bus.
If you are interested in going along for what promises to be a great trip
visiting ten BEAUTIFUL cemeteries that have been meticulously maintained by
the federal government for 57 years and have been "off-limits" to the
general public for that same period of time, contact me right away. A box
lunch from the Powder Keg Restaurant is included in the $20 ticket price.
We are extending the deadline for ticket purchases to a week from today,
which will be WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19. If we sell enough tickets by 11/19/97
to cover the cost of the bus and the lunch, we will engage the second bus.
If we don't sell enough to cover the bare transportation and meal costs,
then the uncashed, voided checks will be returned to the senders with our
regrets.
This will be a fundraiser for the Clark County Cemetery Preservation
Committee. The proceeds will be used to buy materials, equipment and
supplies to be used to restore, preserve and protect some of our abandoned,
neglected cemeteries in this county.
Like I said, if you're interested, let me know as soon as possible. (More
details on the tour and these ten cemeteries are available on the website
listed below.) Thanks.

Hey Scott, Haven't heard from anyone in a while so I wanted to see if

WOW!!! This weekend the Franklin County PCRP Has really started to roll.
I was around the county today as people from all over the country were
e-mailing me cemeteries to check condition. I drove 142 miles today and
added at least one to my project list and looks like I may be adding a
second bringing my total to 4. I have found letters to the editor are
great for a local shot of publicity but I have also set up e-mail
listings of all of my genealogy county posts and are receiving some
information there. Needless to say I could run for mayor of Brookville
and probably win now. I am now known on the streets of town as the
cemetery guy (no joke). So that is how I introduce myself....

Cemetery: (n) A marble orchard not to be taken for granite.
Sorry for this roll call late response. Just got home at midnight from
a 10-hour shift at work.
Things are still progressing with my first project. I had a phone
conversation with the landowners daughter who is doing the burning of
the weeds for us. Looks pretty good I was just there Thursday. Had
another letter in the Brookville newspaper (I am becoming quite popular
in Brookville, the county seat of Franklin County). I received an
e-mail from a boy scout going for his eagle badge (my prayer was
answered). He is excited about helping us out. Give it about another
month and we will have a big jump on this project. Also with all of
connections on the web, I have had a number of people from all around
the country asking me to check on several cemeteries in Franklin County
as to their condition. We have found approx 143 cemeteries in Franklin
County. So the project is coming along nicely.
Now to the exciting news. I work at the local Wal~Mart and today a good
friend of mine who is a retired member of the Indiana House of
Representatives was in the store. I was telling him all about our
project and he said he wanted to help. This man is 75-80 years old and
he said he couldn't help muscle wise BUT be said he was going to call in
a few favors for me. He asked if I had received any grant money for the
project and I said I was told there was no money for projects like this
and he said, and I quote "bull s*#!". Keep in mind this is a spry old
politician. He said to give him a few days and he'd get back with me.
He said there was money available when he was in the house for just this
thing so I will keep all posted....

Please do not send querries through this list.
The Clark County Cemetery Preservation Committee, Inc. was incorporated
10/14/97 as an Indiana non-profit corporation. As the fee to apply for
501(c)(3) status is $150 and since we have 15 months from incorporation to
apply to the IRS for a retroactive "determination letter", we have decided
to hold off for now on the formal application.
We held our organizational meeting this afternoon, elected initial officers,
discussed by-laws and talked about our collective vision for this project.
We hope to appoint Township Captains (we have 12 townships here) who will
each be responsible for keeping an eye on cemeteries in their respective
townships, help coordinate efforts in each township and hopefully develop
productive, working relationships with their Township Trustees.
We are proceeding full steam ahead with our bus tour of the ten pioneer
cemeteries inside the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant at Charlestown. I've
been to 9 of these sites and they are in EXCELLENT condition! This should
be a really fun, exciting trip and will be our first fundraising effort. So
far, there has been a great deal of interest in the tour, from both within
and outside the family history circle.
Tickets are $20 per person. The costs are going to run about $10 for the
motor coach and $5 for the box lunch. The $5 net proceeds will be used as
seed money for the CCCPC, for the purchase of material, equipment and
supplies needed to identify, preserve and restore abandoned and neglected
cemeteries in Clark County. (To date, we have identified 180 cemeteries in
this County.)
We talked about several ideas, including:
Seeking corporate and foundation grants to fund our efforts
(materials, equipment and supplies).
Utilizing convict labor crews, people working off community service
sentences and volunteer labor to restore pioneer cemeteries in Clark County.
A "Dirty Dozen" list of the worst cemeteries in each Township (as I
said, we have 12).
An "Adopt a Cemetery" program.
Getting Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, FFA, school groups, historical
societies, civic organizations, etc. involved.
Figuring out how to reproduce an old, giant 1875 County plat map,
showing the property owners for the entire county. (A fascinating map.) If
we can do this fairly inexpensively, we could sell them as another fundraiser.
We hope to index six of the cemeteries inside the Ammunition Plant.
I already have on-line indexes for three of them (Union, Caldwell and Lentz
Heirs) on our website and one has no remaining stones (the Poor Farm
Cemetery). The remaining six are doable.
Our next meeting will be on Saturday, December 6, 1997 at 2:00 P.M. I
forgot to sign up for a room at the Sellersburg Library for that date, but
that's where we're planing to hold it.
I was interviewed on WHAS Radio (a very popular, 50,000-watt clear channel
station) on Friday morning, 10/31/97. It was a Halloween theme on Joe
Arnold's show. Unfortunately, the interview was at 4:00 A.M. (as in BEFORE
sunup). Ughhh!!! The interview went really well; we talked for about a
half hour. At 7 AM Friday, I got a telephone call from Bob Berry at WWVA in
Wheeling, West Virginia. He had listened to my interview at 4 AM (WHAS has
a huge geographic audience) and wanted to interview me at 8 AM. Of course,
I said yes. Bob and I talked for about 45 minutes.
This morning, a truck driver from Jeffersonville called me to find out about
getting tickets to the cemetery tour. We talked for about an hour and had a
swell conversation.
Now, if I can just get on the air at a civilized hour! :-)
The story about the cemetery tour is supposed to run in the Louisville
Courier-Journal and the Jeffersonville Evening News this week. Haven't seen
it yet, but I'm getting quite anxious. I sent an announcement to the
Madison Courier and hope it runs up there in Jefferson Co., IN as well.
Well, that's what's happened here in Clark County this week. Still haven't
had time to focus on the Clark County page for INPCRP, but thought the above
would suffice as a status report.

Scott-
In response to the Roll Call I am answering.
I am covering DeKalb and Steuben.
As of now, I do have two and possibly more cemeteries being looked at.
There are active people for these cemeteries and are willing to be apart
of this Project.
I am thrilled and am trying to get together with them so we can discuss
things and work out a plan for the cemeteries.

Cemetery: (n) A marble orchard not to be taken for granite.
Hi all,
First,
Time for out monthly roll call...
I would like the County Coordinators to give me a rundown on how things
are going in their counties. Please share your thoughts, ideas, or
concerns.
Second,
Fall is the perfect time to start a cemetery project. The bare trees
and lower weed grown will make it easier to see hidden stones. If you
get someone to go in and knock down the weeds before first snowfall, you
can get the preliminary survey done before first snow and have a
headstart in spring.
Third,
Here is an update for Huntington Co.:
I finally picked my way through the dense jungle of undgrowth at the
Hildebrand Cemetery this week. I actually had to swing a machette to
hack through 8 foot tall weeds and saplings. The ground is covered with
a thick blanket of English Ivy, making it almost impossible to find
downed stones. Of the 20 or so stones that are standing, all but one is
readable. Dates ranged from 1862 to 1889. I am resonably certain that
there are many older and many newer graves there. I had indicated
earlier that this cemetery was on DNR property. I discovered that the
DNR actually has EXCLUDED this ground from its properties. I found the
Corps of Engineers survey markers at the fours corners of the cemetery.
This means I have to backup and make sure the cemetery is under the
jurasdiction of the township before I proceed.
I am working on adopting the other two cemeteries on my current project
list. I have at least one person interested in Pilcher Cemetery.
